Question for AEM guys
Yesterday it came up in a thread about the popping or missing while the car is idling. I had the same problem with my old motor before it blew. Now my new stock motor is doing the same thing. Does anyone know what is causing this or is this normal for the AEM unit? I put new plug in and they all seem to be fine. It sounds more like a popping then a misfire.
try to richen up the idle slightly.....lol i had my idle down perfect, but being gay i messed around w/ crap more, and now it lopes a little..heh..... but when i had it perfect, it idled around 13.7~13.9 afr. i remember reading a couple guys had problems w/ it popping around stoich
I do not have a wide ban but I do not think it needs to be richened. It leaves puddles of black sout on my garage floor. So that poping noise is not something to worry about?
popping in the exhaust is misfiring. something is wrong. my car doesnt pop.
maybe its hella rich. user echo had problems like this i dont know what the resolution was.

Don't have a resolution... I've been on a crazy chase:
0) Replaced plugs/wires.
1) Replaced distributor cap, rotor, ignitor
2) Fixed the missing exhaust manifold bolt.. checked whole engine for vacuum leaks
3) Tried everything on EMS forum that was recommended.
4) Checked compression, thinking it could be bad rings/valves
5) Thinking it's fuel pump now, or FPR...
FalconGSR just told me to try the 310 map instead of the 440.. Gonna give it a
shot this weekend, and let you know. Could be that the UI doesn't let us tweak
some other variables.. who knows.

i've had multiple successes resolving all kinds of idling issues with the Turbo 310 base map. drop in your fuel map, timing map, map max and min, recal the TPS, drop in your AFR #1 map if u have a wideband o2 controller, and turn the key.
How do you expect to do any tuning without a wideband sensor. There was about a 5 point difference in AF when I did my car between the stock O2 and a wideband.
My guess (and this is by personal experience -may not apply in your case)...oil maybe getting into one of your cylinders due to a blown headgasket or blown rings...do a compression check, and also see if you can do a visual check through the sparkpulg holes. see if the top of the pistons look oily or wet.

If I remember correctly, I remember hearing about this somewhere....the determined culprit(i think) was over-rich conditions...
UPDATE on my situation:
I connected my timing light to the wires, and found that #1 and #4 were missing
intermittently. After a series of misses, I would hear a thump in the exhaust.
I'm thinking that the thump is caused by unburned fuel (from the misses) igniting
in the exhaust.
I'm thinking of replacing my distributor at this point.

hopefully everything works out for ya...
oh ya, dont get jolted while hooking the timing light to the wires...that SUCKS
I was sore for a week...somehow my dist. still works though

my exhasut does the same thing. I knew that it was more fuel than regularly but when I got on the dyno there was a misfire on the dyno chart. we pointed it down to the spark plugs and the wires which are stock from 98. I'll be changing the wires out and I should be burning the fuel better thus possibly eliminating the popping.
