Question about using stock rods.
At this point I'm all-motor, only because i'm building my motor one part at a time. I'm seeing what it will do with the stock bottom end and some head work. My ultimate goal is to boost it and make about 300whp reliably. (don't tell the all-motor guys tho.
Anyways, hopefully next year i will be ready to boost it. I know the weakest link will be the cast pistons. So i was thinking of only replacing the pistons (low comp forged), and boosting it with the stock rods. I'd at least have them cryo'd and use ARP rod bolts. So what do you f/i guru's think? Will the stock rods (slightly strengthened) be up to handling my power goals?

no kidding id spend the little bit extra for eagles just for the safe-of-mind

300 WHP on a stock motor/pump gas is not what I would call reliable. I broke ringlands on a stock GSR at a little over 300 WHP, M.A.R.C broke ringlands and cracked his sleeves at around 310 WHP on a stock B18B, Bulldogg83 cracked ringlands on a couple B16 blocks at 330 WHP. Not trying to be a dick, but you shouldn't tell someone you can have 300 whp reliably on a stock motor if you've never done it before yourself.

yeah I'm not comfortable with 300hp on my pistons, esp since my C/R is about 11.4:1 (milled head, jdm gsr motor). I know i could spend some more money and get rods, but why if i don't need it?

why cheap out and half *** a build?
ive got 15k in my motor and im almost done (3k away, lol) i didnt cut corners at any time, chepaing out to get something done will only comeback to haunt you at a later time

Re: (wantboost)
why buy stuff you don't need. I personally don't want to drop 15k on a motor, hell i'd like to only drop about 1k in the bottom end, since i already have that much up top. (I'm a poor college student) I understand eagle rods are thought to be better than stock, but I've seen videos on here of an all motor car breaking eagle rods on one of the first runs. I dont' see any real need to replace the stock rods if they're up to handling the power.
But....i do appreciate your opinions and am seriously considering all the feedback that i've gotten.
thanks

What do you think that car would have done to a set of stock rods. Going through a bottom end and not at least doing a full rebuild with good rods and pistons is silly. It is cheap insurance against all out failure. If you can't afford to do it right now, wait and do it right later.

Re: (Jared)
well this is all theory right now anyways. I'm just getting my topend together right now. As soon as I get another job i'll start working on the bottom end. I guess if i do pistons and rods i can always turn up the boost if i need to. Which, I hear, will likely happen after i get a taste of the dark side.

That's like saying "a no name brand condom should protect me when I'm having sex with random girls in europe, I know I could spend some more money on trojans, but why if I don't need it?"
You're going to forget all about how cheap it was to stick with your stock rods when you throw a rod through your block, and destroy your block, crank, pistons, rods, head, and turbo. If you get stock rods cryo'ed and put ARP's in them you're like 100 dollars short of some eagles. If you're too cheap to dish out another 100 bucks for some better rods, you're never going to be able to afford keeping a 300 WHP car running.

You can make 300whp on a stock bottom end but like pretty everyone else is saying it won't be reliable. If you don't have the cash for a set of eagle rods thats fine because I found an identical set of h beams for 75 less. BTW they come with arp rod bolts just like the eagles.

yeah, i guess it's not really worth risking it, even if the rods would hold up fine, which they probably would. Pistons are the expensive part anyways. Are Spark rods worth getting?
