Question about egt gauge
I'm wanting to get a egt gauge but it this particular model maxes out at 1600 F. I wanted to know if i'm going to need a gauge that maxes out higher? I'm not sure want normal egt's run. thanks

Re: Question about egt gauge (yehiknowrite)
I believe EGT's don't tell the whole story regarding the engines condition. Example: An engine can have high-as-hell EGT's when running retarded timing, but the engine is not very stressed during this condition (most of the heat goes straight out of the exhust). Opposite would be advanced timing where the heat is taken up by the engine and less is blown out the exhaust (this would be bad, but EGT's would be lower). I can't really comment when detonation/pre-ignition/overly rich/lean condition is involved, as I have a whole lot more reading to do regarding this subject.

EGT really isn't that useful. Highest egt is at stoich (14.7:1). It's more of an indicator that everything is burning correctly than a tuning aid IMO.

Re: Question about egt gauge (dustin)
spend the $$ on wideband. It tells you more than EGT does. You can be rich or lean and EGT's can go up so you really don't know what to do about it.
Wideband will tell you what you need to do, richen up or lean out.
<<<<who wishes he would have gotten wideband instead of EGT

well thanks for all of the advice guys. I was planning on getting an egt and then saving for a wideband but sounds like screw the egt and get the wideband. thanks for the info

Interesting responses here....EGTs Are a usefull tuning aid. You could be tuned safe and rich, but your egts could be through the roof, that wouldnt be could, so how can one tune and know its a good tune (tollerable egts) for the adjustments they made? In other words, with only reading a wideband for fuel adjustments, how can u 100% know the engine is tuned perfect? You cant! Tuning is not just about air fuel. Of course, most people tap their downpipes for egts, but thats crap too imo. It should be tapped in the exh manifold runner that goes to the hottest firing cylinder. The way I see, a good EGT gauge is a must for custom tuning and piece of mind. On the other hand, maybe you arent talking about tuning lots more power than stock....ie high hp turbocharged application
