Default Purpose of exhaust temp gauge?

I know the turbo is spinned by the exhaust but what does it matter how hot or cold it is? I just bought a turbo integra and it has an exhaust temp gauge on it and was wondering what significance it has? Thanks

It means don't touch it, its real hot!

In short turbos cause massive heat because of air pressure and restriction, and heat destroys mechanical componets, so high temps are bad, so they need to be monitored.

The gauge is also a good indication as to whether you're running rich (lower temps) or lean (higher temps).
