Project over heating.... any suggestions?

Project over heating.... any suggestions?
My project is having problems.
I started with a 1995 gsr motor that needed new valve seals. I had a 2000 head from a good running motor that i swapped onto the 1995. while swapping the head, i used a cometic head gasket and ARP head studs (this set-up was supposed to soon be turboed). Anyway, with those mods, and everything else normal, the car over heats. It over heats quickly - in about ten minutes.
Now if i remove the thermostat, the car will not overheat. I assumed that it was a a bad thermostat so i went to autozone and got another. the old thermo was tested in water and for sure works and opens. So, Im still having the same problem. I did a compression test as well and came up with good numbers.
Can anyone help me? steer me in the right direction?

both heads were off running motors and removed properly. the head on this motor was installed in the correct sequence and torqued to correct speks. torque specs were double checked while installing.
Fan is wired correctly, does not switch on on its own, instead i have it hardwired to always be on, this is only because i cant figure out what going on with the overheating problem. perhaps this plays a part, but not sure how yet.
If the head were warped would i still get get comp numbers? how could i tell it was warped? any other suggestions?

i would take the head back off, get an oem headgasket, check the head for straitness. and then go from there. It only takes a few hours to do a headgasket so why not? i just dont see it being anything else but the head install, since you said u swapped them because of the valve seals. keep us updated though

from recent experience if head comes back as straight then it is probably a bad head gasket.
Word around town is Cometic (which I have and have heat issues with) is not the greatest. Get a GE head gasket.
Then make sure you bleed the cooling system properly after that.
The last thing I did that actually helped, and this is worse case change radiator. My old Fluidyne was not flowing properly and therefore couldn't cool the car properly. When I got my Koyo, temps. are great!!
Good luck.

That sounds all too familiar. Check this out and see if it applies to you: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=2083018

im getting a new water pump from oreillys tommorow, if that doesnt fix it, off comes the head.
also to add - my fan does not come on on its own, i have to have it hard wired in. would this be a faulty switch by the thermo? if the thermo opens in boiling water it functions properly, correct?
