Default power vs retard

does anyone know a general rule of thumb about how much power you loose per degree of retard?

i.e. how much power would I loose retarding my timing to 10 deg vs 14?

It depends on alot of variables including temperature and humidity. If you want to keep your timing advanced at the edge of max power / detonation, get a J&S safeguard.

I'm off to the rollers very soon. and will hopefully have some form of an answer for you, the J&S is one bad *** unit......move the retard rate back and watch the christmas lights fly.

I hope to lock in one boost level then play with various timming setups.......

Try the MSD BTM ignition...sets the timing at stock until boost, then retards under boost..thats the trick for me.

Its killer cause you dont loose ANY bottom end (greatly reduces turbo lag) yet you have retarded timing timing when and ONLY when you need it...under boost.

Ive heard lots of problems with J&S Safegaurd, when it works its great...when it works.

Nah I do not know about those BTM units, they assume that timing retard should be proportional to boost... which is not true. You do not really need any retard until after 7-8psi and then it is affected by many other variables.

I say get a standalone unit and set timing the right way, then get a J&S as a backup incase your tuning / injectors / fuel setup fails and you want to keep your engine. The J&S works as claimed, folks.

The MSD 6BTM's features have been incorporated into the J&S Ultra Safeguard. You also get the knock retard plus other features. You should care more about the J&S.
