Default Possible to shorten a Tyrus intercooler?

I'm fairly sure that Tyrus (johnnyracecar.com) is too busy these days to make any custom intercoolers, so I'm considering buying one of his 5-inch FMIC models, and having a welder shorten the length a bit.

For my 90 CRX, it looks like 2 feet will be the optimal length for fitting it between the bumper cover and radiator.

My question:
So is it possible to "shorten" a FMIC by hacking off one side and welding it closed, or am I looking at possible leaks or other problems?

Just wondering if this is a good idea or not.

Thanks

it can be done, yes. but might as well just buy it without one endtank. then make your own for that side. or see if he'll do it for you for some extra $$

No he won't do that.. What your asking is almost impossible and the amount of work do that is just not worth it.

I also think it would be too much work involved to shorten the core. Removing height from a horizontal row core is one thing but length? Dang you would have to re-weld an end plate to each core row then build the endtank off of that. The possibility of leaks, impeeding the flow into the rows, or burn though would bee too much for me to try.
This is the main issue with the guys modifying Powerstroke cores into Honda-useable cores. You can take one Powerstroke (or equivalent) core and separate it by height into three equal height cores but the lenght can't be changed as easily.
Economical but a PITA to mount under a narrow Honda bumper cover. They work fairly well but I'd reather spend my cash on a good/correct sized core.
Good luck with finding your intercooler solution

Thanks for the discussion so far guys. It's very helpful to me. It seems like the idea of shortening the Tyrus FMIC is bad, so I will abandon in.

There's one FMIC I'm looking at that is the correct length, but taller than I would like. It will still fit...maybe I'll just go with that one.

Yeah, the pic below explains what I would like to avoid if possible. I really don't want to hack my bumper cover this much.

What about this?
My friend is selling a Spearco that's 2.25"X10"X22"
Do you think this size will introduce a lot of lag, compared to a Tyrus FMIC?

Setup: Greddy TD04H on 90 CRX/ZC, running 6-10psi

that turbo setup in the above pic is using a hf manifold with plate, 2.5 inch piping and a ihi silly turbo
10 psi

no lag at all on them intercoolers at all with smaller turbos.

Thanks em1-t. I am also considering going with a Starion/Conquest FMIC. Seems like this one will fit both my airflow and my spatial needs pretty well. I would just need to cut or modify my center bumper support.

Man, I must be pretty slow..I cannot figure out how you guys are able to route your intercooler piping from compressor to FMIC.
I spent an hour last night just staring at my bumper/radiator/etc (w/ bumper cover off) and walked away scratching my head.

I mean, I could easily grab my hole saw and be done with it. I guess I'm looking for an easy/clean solution and that is my problem

Any insight/tips appreciated. This board rocks.

What that guy did was totally un-necessary, if you have the right tools and a lot of time you can make the Tyrus fit perfectly. It takes a lot of trial and error and a little creativity but it can come out looking great. Check mine:

Yeah, I remember your posts here on H-T./ I think I even saved the pics you posted of your Tyrus install. Thanks for doing that.

Question: How did you run your piping from compressor to the Tyrus inlet?
Did you have to cut out metal from your bumper?
Any pics?

Thanks

My compressor outlet is pointing up, it goes out a hole and around. I had to cut a lot of metal.

I think that for the price, you get a good quality intercooler and I love how they fill the front of an open bumper cover as well as they do. Good piece IMO

meaning no bumper support.. so it tucks right in.. i sitll have my bumper support and all there nicely... and bumpers i can get all day long

i dont mind my hacking of my car... thats what i bought it for.

i didnt feel like removing the bumper support so i just hacked up the bumper nicely, if i slam into something i dont feel like eating motor parts..

kthnx

All of my bumper support is still there, in fact I only had to notch it in two areas and bend the lip of it. It was not easy getting it to fit like that, it seriously took almost three afternoons. Next time I have the bumper off I'll try to take some pictures. All of the bumper support is working though.
