Default Pistons Breaking

Do pistons break only due to detonation or can they break under too much boost? B16 w/ stock internals at 12 psi. Thanks.

pistons can crack, but your rings will go way before your pistons do

This is what happened... I had blow by one time after seeing what my car can do. My rings went, broke three pistons. I was just wondering if I replace those stock parts with aftermarket, would they be okay?

it's all in how you tune bro..eliminate detonation, you'll eliminate chance of pistons breaking

I would personally try forged over stock....forged pistons are more tolerant to poor tuning...it'll give you a wider window for tuning options....whereas, stock pistons (especially high compression ones) is much more difficult to tune...you have a smaller margine for error..

exactly

and if you do replace the pistons you might as well do the rods and then you can go higher with boost

On stock pistons you will loose your ring lands and then obviously your rings. they are one of the weakest parts of the cast piston under boost. With bad tunning obviously some thing has to go, and thats were it starts most time.

Been there, done that! Lucky enough though I never did too much damage to the cylinder sleeves.

Now its bored with Arias pistons..................try and break now will ya!

So only with bad tuning, the parts will break. What if you had good tuning with lots of boost???

Cast pistons will probably crack under big boost. If not the pistons, it will probably be the sleeves.
