piston to wall contact
wassup, i just picked up this block and was told it burned oil and now i know why. question though, what cuased this? too tight of bores? too loose? other?

it looks like black death, that's the term they use when the clearance too tight, and it scraped the skirt wayy more than it has to.
It was either crappy machining, or the out of roundness of the bore is compromise due to detonation..

Those pistons look fairly new. My guess is they were installed after just a quick honing, and the cylinders were out of round. Definitely too tight. If they were too loose, there would be damags all around the sleeve, not just in one place.

i didnt take it anywhere, i bought the block as is, i was told it burned oil and that it needed work. so i dont know who did the machine work or assembly
im just tryin to figure out if anything is wrong with the block so i can correct it before i rebore and hone to 84.5mm and slap in new pistons, and i dont wanna make the same mistake the previous person did

You guys missed this one completely (well maybe not fabman)
That piston ran too lean and overheated (not the motor, just the piston).
If the galling started at the bottom of the skirt and worked upward, it would be a clearance issue.
But in this case, the piston was so hot on top, it lost all it's taper and actually became fatter on the top and caused it to scrape the cylinder. If you look at the middle ring, you would probably see that the ends had butted after losing their gap and scraped all the oil off of the cylinder wall.
Only fix is to bore it and get new pistons.
