<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by turbotommy &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">how do you get more gradual than 90 degrees? no matter how smooth the transitions from straight to straight are (how long of a radius) you still have a longer path to travel and another wall for exhaust to run into. from that pic the exhaust must be routed 90 degrees "gradually" then another x degrees to get back under the oilpan. i don't see how this would be beneficial over say a 3" 90 degree bend with a 4" radius.

dont take this as flaming that setup, i know it works, ive seen it work. just asking.

Well his goals were very high so we tweaked anything we could to gain a little extra power. His plans were 35psi (or more) and 700HP on a Nonvtec setup so he needed any extra benefit I could give him. The idea was to run very slight radius turn right off the turbo instead of running a tight radius 90*. So I clocked the turbo at a slight angle, making sure not to sit it further then Garrett allows.

The exhaust temps are very high at this area so the expanded gases will need to work much hard when passing that first turn than any other turn of the exhaust system. This will result in less reverse flow, or exhaust gas reversion after top dead center, and will make the inertial scavenging towards the end of the cycle. The exhaust gasses that occupy the clearance volume will be carried around into the following intake stroke. As you can see, even at 100% volumetric efficiency the mixture will still only be 89.6% fresh intake charge. If the chamber pressure does not reach atmospheric by the end of the cycle, this 10.6 %, or 4.66 cubic inches of exhaust gasses will be pressurized, and will take up even more space once they are allowed to expand as the chamber volume increases during the intake stroke. If the exhaust backs up at this point of the exhaust, this will reduce volumetric efficiency considerably. This is because the exhaust gasses will occupy space that could be used for fresh mixture. These exhaust gasses effectively "take away" from the swept volume, or displacement of the motor. The main object to the exhaust system then, should be to evacuate as much of the spent gasses as possible, thus the reason why we use larger turbines, merge collectors, longer equal length turbo manifolds like the topmount and large 3” to 4” exhaust systems.

Do you have a picture of that manifold off the car?

Is the flange perpendicular to the collector, or is the collector cut at an angle to make the turbo sit that way?

You tell'em Brad

The manifold works extremely well with my setup, people can call it the gangsta lean or whatever they want. all i knwo is brad did a wonderful job and hopefully soon ill be able to get her on the dyno to prove it. I think i proved it pretty good with a 12.40 pass first time at the track with the car and only on about 8 psi of boost. Id like to prove it more with big hp numbers, a great power band and some low 10's but that will definatly take some seat time and alot more tuning

Sorry i dont have any other pics other then with the manifold in the car

Sort of a "Budget" top mount/exhaust... I have about 500 bucks in everything, manifold, exhaust, flexpipe, muffler, dumptube...

1.5" runners, and 3.5" dp/exhaust - stainless and mandrel of course

the turbo outlet/flange opening are 2.5", the downpipe is 3.5"... it's about a 1" long transition between the two
