just a little FYI,

A larger surface area is going to be more effecient then having a thicker core.

Unless he puts a couple of fans on it. Then what do you think would be better?

edit: Ah what the hell. The main problem with the thicker units is the fact it's so hard to get the air to flow through them, but if you get the air to flow through them they are as effiecient or more efficient as the wider taller ones. Porsche puts a fan on those things to help cool the air. They also have ducting forcing the air into them on some models. Try finding some little fans and maybe a way to duct the air into it. Maybe an airdam underneath it to focus all the air that normally goes under the car into it. Just an idea.

Yep, that's the stock IC from a 944 Turbo. That should be plenty for a Civic. I had a modded 944 Turbo for a while, and at 17psi, it was wicked fast, easily pushing near 300hp. In the Porsche, it was located behind the header panel, so air had to enter through the bumper, then travel through a duct up to the intercooler.

more surface area in the direction facing the front of the car is better
fans could work to cool air at idle and low speeds, but at higher speeds their presence might restrict air flow through the intercooler.
