Default Optimal tranny for SOHC...

Ok, let me say that I really know nothing about how such and such gear affects the car, and I don't know what the final drive is either. I'm used to autos and ford 9 inch rears

I have a 96 DX HB now, and since the clutch exploded I have the opportunity to swap in a tighter ratio tranny. Somebody give me some tech lovin on these specs:

96 Civic DX Hatchback

1st: 3.25
2nd: 1.761
3rd: 1.066
4th: 0.852
5th: 0.702
Final Drive: 3.722

96 Civix EX Sedan

1st: 3.25
2nd: 1.9
3rd: 1.25
4th: 0.909
5th: 0.702
Final Drive: 3.722

96 Civic EX Coupe

1st: 3.25
2nd: 1.9
3rd: 1.25
4th: 0.909
5th: 0.702
Final Drive: 4.25

EDIT: Actually, I guess I should say that I at least understand that the higher the number for a gear the higher the engine rpms will be compared to a gear with a lower numerical value.

EX is the best possible SOHC configuration, closest to the GS-R tranny.

Cool, that's what I figured, but it looks like the EX sedan is the same as the EX coupe, only it has the same FD as the DX. How will that affect the overall gearing? Worse than an EX coupe I assume?

Just found some info via Google....looks like my thinking was correct that the FD affects the entire range of gears, just like a rear end diff does in a RWD car.

Hands down....EX s40 tranny. the DX coupe is the next closes one w/ longer 2nd and 3rd gears and a lower FD. EX all the way. You should be able to find a z6 or y8 for pretty cheap, i got my y8 for $175.

Hmmmm....I am NOT positive btu they will be very similar...as for the install...ask VTC_Boostless_civic...I think I read a thread about him swapping in a z6 on his y8 becuase one of his syncro(sp) was bad....

But the Y8 on the Y7 is easy, everyting bolts up...except you have to reuse the VSS(veicle spped sensor) from the y7 tranny. it is easy, just unbolt the one 10mm bolt holding it in, slip it out...then put it in the y8.

Just in general. What is the final drive and what does it do? I always thought the final drive was 5th gear, but they have a 5th and final listed and since civics aren't six speed i was obviously wrong.

See that big gear at the bottom? That's the differential where the axles slide into. The gear ratio created between that and the countershaft is the final drive.

*edit- for a chance to win an all expenses- paid trip to the water cooler, name that motor (no peeking at the URL!).

wow single cam gears suck. even the EX coupe tranny which is the shortest ratio's of all of them is still longer then an LS. in a bind I would go w/ the 96 ex coupe tranny unless there are aftermarket final drives available for the sohc. are there?

Bitch bitch bitch. I'd hate to have a B series! Imagine all that internal drag from the extra cam and the lost motion devices!

Yep, and you'll have to mortgage your parents to buy one. You'd be better off finding a ZC tranny and using an Si/ EX final drive. That would get you pretty close to a GSR ratio.

Whats best for turbo?
I know on b series they say LS tranny is good for turbo because it has long gears and on on preludes that the si tranny is best. Does this go for civics as well? Is the non VTEC(dx) tranny best for sohc with boost?

There's two sides to it. One side says taller gears (DX) work better because it keeps you in the powerband longer between shifts. It also helps traction. The reason it does these things is because it reduces the available torque to the wheels. But... if you have this abundance of power, you can run taller gears so you're not shifting so much and to get better mileage. Requiring three gears to get to 60 isn't the only answer. The Diablo VT Roadster can hit 62 MPH in 1st gear.

The other side is that the taller gears keep the motor from revving as quickly, keeping your spool time low.

There is no real answer here. Like everything else pertaining to performance, there are trade offs and compromises. And opinions...

When it comes to drag racing, shorter gears are always better. Traction problems are better solved with slicks

Then again, a buddy of mine years ago had a 67 Dart that he ran like 3.20 gears or something and used tiny slicks and had better results than a lot of guys with 4.11s and big slicks. He ran 12 somethings with a close to stock 340 sb and 4 speed.
