Tech Help!!! Tranny Grinds in 2nd Gear
I've got a 97 Civic Ex Sohc Vtec motor and recently my tranny started to grind while putting it into 2nd gear and sometimes in 1st. When I'm in second gear and I let off of the gas, it will pop out of gear. I changed the tranny fluid and it wasn't low at all. It still does it. Doesn't grind in 3rd, 4th, 5th, reverse. Only once in a great while going in 1st. What's my best solution? Get another used tranny? I'm thinking if it's the syncro's then it'll be labor intensive = $$$$$$$$. Is it hard to replace syncro's?

1st and 2nd is the same synchro which usually go out first, but the most expensive ones, i say about $200-300 but dont quote me, and the labor at least $200, so up to you which way u want to go. good luck

ohh crap...ever since reading this thread it has made me realize that's what also could be wrong with my tranny. like when i'm in a lower gear it makes a loud rattling/grinding noise, and as a i go into a higher gear the sound goes away a little more. so i always try to shift as high as possible.
i always thought the noise came from a spun bearing in the tranny, could that also be it?
if your synchros are gone, does that also make it a little harder to ease out the clutch? because when i'm in 1st gear and i ease out the clutch it seems to be a little rough, but then i can do it smoothly in my other friend's civics.

It does the same thing in my friends 98 ex. Used to actually stay in gear when it was cold but now it pop's out all the time. He had it diagnosed by a mechanic. It's the tranny, not the synchro. Your second gear is fawked. Sorry for the bad news. Hope it's not but it sounds exactly like what he was experiencing... in the same tranny too. Must be too many sohc vtec having people chirping second. Good luck bro, mike D

Awwww....fawwwwk! So anyone got a S20 Tranny off of a OBDI JDM SOHC VTEC ZC motor? I think the S20 has the LSD in it correct? Or does anyone live in the bay area that has one in excellent working condition that they're looking to pretty much pawn off or make space in their garage?
