open vs. closed dumptube
theres a topic going around about using screens, you just use a big Q-clamp, cut a piece of screen(or 2 like i use) then push it over the intake and tighten the Q-clamp around it. as for the loudness, once i get sick of it i'l prly put a lawnmower muffler inline witht the dump tube, but for now, it stays

I run no filter [only screen] so maybe the loud *** turbo is covering the sound of the dump? I don't re-route my dump into my exhaust, but I have a dump tube that is about 24" - 30" long.</TD></TR></TABLE>
thats weird. i thought my friend was the only one. I put a revhard kit on his b18b and you can't hear when it opens at all. I did 2 external dumps in the last couple weeks and both are extremely distinct and loud when they open. Confusing, but as long as it works fine who cares

i also was running the screen instead of filter. i doubled it over and i find it hard to believe that any particle of substance would make it into the turbo.
a little off topic, but one of my friends is running an open dump on his car(vr6) and its quite possibly the loudest thing ive ever heard. he gets on it and people a half mile away are looking around like what the **** was that??!

As you know, the wastegate controls the flow of exhaust gasses [not just "un-needed air"] through the turbine. In some if not most states, it is illegal to have an open dump tube because you are simply venting raw exhaust gasses to the atmosphere. In a closed system, you re-enter the gasses that have flowed through the wastegate back into the main exhaust system downstream of the turbo. This allows the gasses that have passed through the wastegate [and essentially around the turbo] to still pass through the catalytic converter as well as the rest of the exhaust system. This is undesirable to some people, because it is thought that unless you have a very shallow [low angle] re-entry into the main exhaust stream, you are hindering the flow of exhaust and therefore causing backpressure, thus robbing horsepower. I run an open dump because making a closed dump system would have been hell. I run no catalytic converter as it is, so having a closed dump for the sake of the environment would do no good. If you do run an open dump, you should still have some sort of tube to direct the gasses out of the engine bay, or a number of bad things can happen [melting hoses, overheating radiator, sucking raw exhaust into compressor, etc.].

im thinking about ditching my filter and throwing a screen on my turbo so I can hear it more over the open wastegate. i love the sound however, id like to quiet it up just a bit and i want to hear the turbo more. plus i hear quite a few guys are running a screen....i just need to get a bit more info on how to mount it on the turbo, etc before i do it.</TD></TR></TABLE>
A screen is a lot more restrictive than an air filter.

Thanks for clearing that up, well explained. So it's basically for environmental issues... so people with open set-up's... how do they pass inspections etc.. etc.. or maybe they just don't pass them technically and pay the mechanic?

Some states and locations don't require cars to be inspected. I live in GA, where parts are non-inspection...but where I live, all I have to do is pass an emission test. I don't have a Ref looking through my car to see what is and isn't legal. Honestly, I don't think most Emission Testers could tell a turbo from fuel filter.
It does help to know someone though...that's how some people I know pass without a catalytic converter.

Are you sure it wasn't open downpipe and not open dump?

Just the sniffer? I don't think horsepower is a factor...if you have a good tune [i.e. - good AFR out of boost] you should be fine. The only way I think it could be a factor is that most high HP applications don't run a cat.

shietz...if MN ever got back into doing the sniffer testing...i'd slap on my stock injectors, 3" cat, stock exhaust and use my EMS to tune a/f to pass the sniffer.

I will let you know. I am going to try tomorrow morning. All 55 inches of my exhaust. I talked to a guy down at the emmisions place and told him about my car (my exhaust dumps right under the shifter) and he told me to bring a piece of flex to temporarily route the exhaust out the side of my car so they could get the sniffer in it. I also told them I didn't want anyone driving my car on the rollers due to the Tilton twin disk. He told me just to tell the tester and they will test my car without the rollers, this should help emissions a bit seeing as no load will be on the engine.
