Default Oil in inlet????????????????????

grrrrrrrrrr.
what the hell is this?
thing has like 7k miles on it

(never mind the ghetto dumb tube, stray connector etc )

its not really oily, its more smudgy(if thats a word) as you can see by my finger mark.

Now, I DO NOT have a proper catch can set up. the valve cover is just open.
The car DOES NOT smoke at all. As far as I know my return line is just fine too.
I read in a post I searched out and ninescrx(not spelled right) said that something like this is normal. ????
Is it ok/normal?
whats going on?

(sorry for the shitty pics, I took them with my phone)

thanks for the help

my dumptube dumps about a foot below (angled away) but that coupled with my ghetto slip on filter..could that be a cause? hrmm..
i dont like the looks of that stuff anyways
i am sick too so smelling it wont give me any more clue as to what it is(althouhg im sure its oil)

Some oil is normal....I'd say your fine.

Is the Filter your using a dry or wet type? (not saying this is the cause, but just wondering)

There is supposed to be small amount after time, but that looks horrendous....if you want, you can send it over here and I can take a look at it for you. We can talk about what to do after the inspection

The last time i saw oil in the inlet similar to you have depicted the seals were blown. The car smoked only a little bit, it ended up the return line was clogged a little bit causing enough of a restriction.

My car doenst smoke however I do beleive my return line might be angled upwards a bit I thought I could get away with it but it looks like I may have been wrong.
thanks for replying!

Mines doing the same thing. Except from around the oil drain gasket. So I put some copper sealant on it. Gonna go see if I can slope it a bit. ;(

ok, just went and took a few quick pics.

The camera was pretty much level.
the oil pan itself slopes down a bit and my fittings are flush against it so the end of the fitting angles down just a bit but this doesnt look much of a problem to me(maybe it is??)
im thinking my problem lies elsewhere..??

Looks to be about a 10-15 degree angle, that isnt much of a problem. I would imagine that there is another problem somewhere in the return line. My oil pan has a bad angle on it and the turbo is 100% after 2-3K miles, its the restriction that really kills the oil flow.

try taking off ur return line and see if there's any indication of oil going to the oil pan. (or oil going to through the line for that matter)

yeah the angle is about 10 deg or so.
the line is straight and not kinked so thats not a prob. Ill pull if off anyways just to see if there is in fact any oil getting through.. if there is oil going through..i dunno what else.
could low oil /lack of oil cause the same problem?(ie: something is wrong with the feed?)

No, its the restriction with the oil return. If there was a restriction in the feed line there would be oil starvation, and the center section bearings would be toast. Only the return line having a restriction would cause the seals to go bad since the pressure builds up and cannot be relieved.

I dunno...if the line isn't clogged...I'd say the line is fine(by looking at the pics)....It may just be a small amount of oil leaking from the seals ( and/or from the filter maybe as well) with just the combination of dirt that makes the oil "look" like a lot....

I'd also check your IC piping/IC to see if a significant amount of oil has collected there...that should be a good indication if the comp. seal is blown or not.

don't worry about return line... i'll show you mine and mine works fine

hint: look under your sink in the bathroom.... you understand why the upwards is nothing...... it's all physics

Actually it does make a big difference. There is back pressure on the line if there is an angle. Simple physics says that there is a back pressure created by having a force in both the x and the y direction dictated by the angle of the slope. Since there is a y componet of the force acting on the oil, gravity is being used against the fluid flow. There will be a restriction by simple physics.

Jon, what size are you feed and return lines?

If you can - put an oil pressure guage inline with the feed and see if you are getting crazy oil pressure there.....If so, it's possible your return line might not be able to flow enough. If that is the case, you may need something to restrict the amount of flow somewhat on the inlet side - perhaps a nipple reducing the inlet size.

Also, it could be that your turbo wasn't reassembled properly after the coating was done...or that the coating interfered with the oil seals making a good seal.
mine doesn't have any oil/smudge like that, and I run it pretty much open - no filter.

My turbo has way more km's than yours doesn.
my feed is -4 and my return is -10. No problems on the sizes of the lines. they are fine.
As for the coating interfering. I dont think it has anything to do with it!

question is right now. Should I still drive my car(this is my daily driver )

I wont boost any but the thing will still be spinning.
fawk.. hopefully this weekend ill have time to take apart the return and have a look.
