Default Oil coolers? ARe they hard to install yourself?

Well, pretty much what the topic says, I wonder how difficult the they are to put in yourself.

This would be concerning the greddy oil cooler.

As soon as they get some into the country that is.

no, the problem would probably be the spot you want to install it....if you have an intercooler probably behind it...but you have to make brakets

Yeh....I have a perma cool maxi cool...I was playing around to see where it fits..check out the pictures

edit: ITs the kind with the fan on it...I didnt test fit it with the fan though, only without it. I dont know if the fan will fit on there, or if it will actually overcool the oil.

do you want to relocate the filter? or keep the filter there and get a 'sandwich adapter'?

i was reading about how you should have some kind of oil thermostat because u dont want cold oil running through that cooler on a cold day...

oil tempature below the minmun will degrade durability just as fast as hot oil.

i think its more of a diverter so that when the oil reaches a certain temp it diverts oil to the cooler.

also i think the best setup would be to have the oil drain from the turbo into a drain box right below. then u have a oil sump pump that pumps the oil through the oil cooler from the resevoir below the turbo.. and back into the pan.

I work at a Tranny shop and we have **** o loads of Tranny coolers for automatics laying around. Do you guys think a tranny cooler will work for a oil cooler? I would think so they work the same way.

Easy to install, but definitely set up a budget. Fittings can get expensive.
The cooler

The thermostat and remote filter adapter

Spin on adaptor and autotechnic (same as greddy) whatever-it's-called thing

You can't see it because it's behind the spin on adapter, but you can see the turbo and cylinder head (ls/vtec) oil supply line (cooled from the oil cooler).

I went back and checked that. It's actually dry back there. I just finished assembling this setup when I took that pic and I think that's just some oil that leaked out before I tightened everything down. However I did have two leaks somewhere else. Not to bad considering all those damn fittings.

edit: grammer

I believe the Greddy oil cooler does have auto switch of some sort.

my .02...

I installed a perma cool core and thermostat, with a trans dapt relocator on my B16A last year. the set up worked well, but after buying all the parts, and the frustration of cutting the lines to the right sizes etc. I would just buy the greddy kit. the tube on the back of the motor where the oil filter/adapter plate was too long, so I had to remove it and machine about 1/4" off it to get the adapter to mate with the block. real pain in the *** since the tube is lock tited into the block. I mounted the core where the A/C condensor used to be, since the aux fan is still in the car I can kick the A/C switch on for some extra cooling power when needed... good luck

I've got basically the same setup as the Greddy for less than half the price. Screw that!

As far as the oil thermostat goes, I personally think that's a bunch of crap. Oil has no problem being cold, it doesn't harm it at all, or at least that I've heard of.

If anyone has pics of a remote oil cooler on an H22 or h23 I would be interested to see if the adapter sandwiches between the stock oil cooler and the filter or if the stock oil cooler needs to be taken off. I would think that it would still use the stock oil cooler, just not sure. Anyone done it on an H22 or do I have to be the first one to do it and post tech on it?!!!
