Default Oil Cooler Question

Now that I have a turbo on my engine I am looking into getting an oil cooler. I see all the real expensive kits that come with the adapter plate to allow for an extra oil line. Could I just buy a $30 core and put it inline with one of my oil lines going either from or to my turbo? or would that decrease oil flow to the turbo? Also another quick question, my block was just rebuilt when can I go back to a synthetic oil?

Thanks

a oil cooler i think is a good idea and if you wont you can put it on the oil line going to the turbo not on the return line

1000 miles then you can go back to synthetic

Putting the oil feed line into your oil return would most likely impede the flow of oil coming out of your turbo(not good for seals).

I also don't know a lot of oil coolers that use -4an to -3an size line(common turbo feed line size). In any case, tying it into the feed line would restrict the flow of the oil cooler as well. Most oil coolers I know of are -6an to -10an in line size. You can actually find oil cooler kits for as low as 150 bucks online. The only thing is, most of the oil sandwich/adapter plates that come with these don't use the filtered oil. You can most likely just buy an inline oil filter to solve this problem.

If you want to make your own setup, http://www.anplumbing.com has all the stuff to do it. Just do a search, you'll find multiple ways of setting up an oil cooling system.

Good Luck mang

i dont think that an inline oil cooler in your turbo feed would impeed the flow too much. Even if you had -4an fittings all the way, it's under 50+ psi and shouldn't have any problem w/ flowing enough, the turbo doesn't use that much oil, that's why many people use only a -3an feed.

I honestly was thinking about the flow rate of the oil out of the oil cooler and back into the motor, but if the cooler oil is going to the turbo anyways through the -3an lines, I guess it would still be a good setup.

make sure you purchase a unit with a thermostat, otherwise you will risk overcooling your oil, and it's not good for your engine. Usually a 160-190 degree oil thermostat.

the only downside is when you do oil changes, it's a little harder to completely drain the system of oil, but i like to persuade oil to escape with compressed air through the oil filler cap and using my hand to seal.
