Default normal operating temperature ??

Hey peps.. I have a little question I have to ask you guys. I know this is about normal operating temperature of a B18c1, but this motor is fully built (GE sleeved, 9:5:1 JE pistons, rods) and boosted(SC61 at around 9psi making 330whp) so I thought I would post it here. Ok, the question is just like it sounds whats the normal operating temperature of a sleeved boosted gsr motor?? When I was with my tuner doing a street tune he asked me if my car runs that warm all the time (stock needle just under half way on the guage) and I said yeah its always in that spot. We thought nothing of it. I went out and got a aftermarket temp guage cuz I wanted to see exactly where I was at. it reads in C and sits right at 100C witch is 212F by my calculations. Isnt that to high? I have read from searching that 190F is about right? Would a sleeved motor run warmer? Thanks for your help.

I'm running a sleeved LS/VTEC, my operating temps are at 93 C as indicated by my Power FC. The thermostat opens at 185 F and the fan comes on at 94 C.

I'm posting this as a reference for your problem.

I too have a half core radiator, forgot to metion that. Yeah I have been told by a few people that some engines just run hotter then others. I have also been told that I should get a better rad, and better fan, witch I will be doing here really soon. I plan on hitting the dyno here in 2 weeks to get tuned for E85, and that should help a little with engine temps too.

Fully warmed up, I'm at 185-190 degrees. I have seen as high as 210 in stop and go traffic on a hot day. Drops as soon as I get up to speed.

Temp gauge, water or oil?

I have only an oil temp gauge and it gets to like 220F daily driving. It worries me a bit.

Is everyone who's posting also turbo'd?

It may also depend on where you live, I'm in Florida, it is so damn hot here ALL the time!!

Water, I dont have a Oil temp gauge yet, but I will be getting one here soon. Yeah I am boosted. When I boost alot it gets pretty hot, I would say atleast 220-25 or so, but then it goes back down when I am out of boost.

true. I've never seen it go over 225F.

I can definitely tell a power loss though with the motor that hot, at around 180F, the motor rocks!!

180-190 F is ideal temperature for our engines. Hotter isn't necessarily bad, but will take away some power. Just make sure your coolant mix is right (use a hydrometer if necessary), your system is bled properly, and your fan is in good working order and your radiator isn't clogged.

You can test your fan switch to see if it is working properly....Take a voltmeter, and test the green wire against engine ground. The fan should come on around .54 to .60 v. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong about those voltages).

Good Luck!!

I will check the fan, but I know its coming on, I can hear it running when I put my car in the garage after some spireted driving. I changed the coolant last night, I was running water wetter and dist water, but I went with 50/50 mix, I live in denver.

212F is fine. I have had a lot of GSR's and ITR's run at or around that temperature. If you are worried buy a 1600+CFM fan

im turbo but not built and i was also concerned about the temps my car hits. usually while on the highway im at 165-170. city driving its around 180ish. if im in trafic its usally arond 210 unstill i start moving, its been at 230 before on really really really hot days while in trafic for close to an hour and once it hit 240 but i shut the car off imidiatly... but i do feel a diffrence in power when it goes over 180... anything after that the car feels a lo slower and as if it doesnt want to go....

external oil coolers should be in your future.

I used to have one, now i'm in the process of putting it back on. I should have never took it off.

I know theres more threads out there about this too...

Non built motors

d series with oil cooler and 160 thermo

180 normal driving. 190 highway. 210-220 track days, with a 240+ but it was upper 90's with equal humidity. Stock as stock can be 15 psi t3/t4, oh and oil cooler too.

Friends b16 - he rarely gets over 200. 10 psi, sti turbo.

We both have half core radiators. So i don't know. IMO everyones car will be different. My downpipe is about 1/4 inch off my radiator, so i'm sure that isn't helping me any.

Good luck.
