Newb Engine Builder: I Question, U Answer
Well let me start by reasons I've started this thread. I've started this thread because there are a few question I have about engine building and this may help other new engine builders that may have the same questions. I do more then reasearch all question on "google" and i know how to use the H-T search bar but search search doesn't give me a justified answer, so I have resulted to come her and make a thread.
What is "piston to wall clearance"? Is this Bore + Wall clearance of the cylinder wall?
How do we adjust "piston to wall clearence"?
How do I measure Piston to wall clearance correctly with a dial bore gauge?
What is "zeroing" the dial bore gauge?
Is this placing the gauge to the desired wall clearance then measuring the "bore"?
For instances the bore gauge is "zero" to .0030" and the bored is 81.5 mm =3.209" when the cylinder bore is measured it should read 3.209 correct?
For instance say you have a bore size of 81.5mm = 3.209" and your recommend wall clearance is 0.0030". Does this mean the overall bore should be 3.212" ?
Sorry for my Grammer,
Thanks

Like I told you in your other thread. If you cannot do unit conversion and add two numbers together you're in trouble.

What is "piston to wall clearance"? Is this Bore + Wall clearance of the cylinder wall?
It is obviously exactly what it says it is - The distance between the piston and the cylinder wall.
How do we adjust "piston to wall clearence"?
Bore/Honing.
How do I measure Piston to wall clearance correctly with a dial bore gauge?
With a dial bore gauge and micrometer.
What is "zeroing" the dial bore gauge?
Turning the gauge so it reads "0". (Obviously.)
Is this placing the gauge to the desired wall clearance then measuring the "bore"?
You do realize the gauge won't change measurements as it's just a device that measures?
For instances the bore gauge is "zero" to .0030" and the bored is 81.5 mm =3.209" when the cylinder bore is measured it should read 3.209 correct?
What? Stay in school - don't sleep in math class.
For instance say you have a bore size of 81.5mm = 3.209" and your recommend wall clearance is 0.0030". Does this mean the overall bore should be 3.212" ?
Been drinking coffee have we? 3.209" + .003" = 3.212" ... Are you wanting us to check your homework too? Just so you know 81.5mm = 3.208661 - Cutting corners in engine building is never a good idea...
Sorry for my Grammer,
Grammar.
Thanks
Any time.

ok i think i know what hes asking, if your bore is 81.5mm and the recommended piston to wall clearance is .003 then what u want is a piston thats .003 smaller than the bore so the math goes 81.5mm - .003 and that equals the piston size but i know that 81.5 will be your piston size so the bore should read .003 over the piston size. your wall clearance is determined by taking the bore size and subtracting the piston size this will give u the wall clearance. get everything into the same units of measurement and write it all out.

For the most part I've figured it out.
From Cp Spec sheet
Cp calls for .0035" pistons to wall clearance
Bore size is 3.327
Piston size is 3.3235
Difference from the cylinder wall and the .0035"
In the video of "evans tuning" he wanted .004 clearance. I did the math it would be 3.3275 not 3.328 like he said. Did he just round up?

(3.209) but appearently the pistons is smaller and 3.209" is the bore size of the cylinder and if the mfg of the piston calls for .003" then the piston size is "3.206" to give you that .003" of piston to wall clearence".
Please correct me if im wrong.
u bore the cyl to what size of piston u want to run u can virtually make it any size u want. take it to the machine shop and tell them u want this size of bore and they will do it for u. what engine are u building?
