Need suggestions for $6-8K turbo setup

Default Need suggestions for $6-8K turbo setup

I'm going to have about 6K to put toward putting a turbo on my car. I have a 2000 LS and want to get between 350 to 400 whp. So far, I am thinking that I will use a T3/T4 and run high compression (i.e. 18-24 psi), but that's about as far as I've gotten. I know I will need some serious work done to my block internals and have been contemplating a larger bore size. Could someone point me in the right direction?

for 350 to 400 horses you will not need to spend nearly that much, i see that you are a new member so i will be nice, try the search process...you will be able to find a lot of info with out having to throw up a thread about it. if that does not to the trick then make a thread or keep this one going. good luck and watch out here on h-t because it is easy to get owned...

Read the book Maximum Boost by Corky Bell. If you're serious about a turbo that's the right direction to start.

I'm not trying to be a jerk but you don't know enough to have a 400hp car (neither do I). You said you want to run high compression which is bad for a turbo engine. But you said high compression is 18-24 PSI and that's VERY high so you are probably referring to the measurement of boost you would like to run.

Yes I know. What I meant was that he was confused and 24 psi was not the right measurement for what he was talking about. I'd like to see him run the compression that high...especially with a turbo.

Sorry, but I try not to come off like a total idiot. By high compression, I was referring to the amount of boost I would be running.

I understand that ideally, I would want my compression ratio to be as close to ideal (12.5:1, I believe) as possible. I also know that if my compression ratio is too high it will have negative effects on my engine, i.e. detonation.

Sorry for my poor use of terminology earlier.

your block is said to be able to take up to 12-14 psi stock so if you get your head built right and a little internal work you can get the horsepower you want. it's simple to do and then just pick the turbo you want. i think that garret turbos are pretty good so look for one of those kits. just a suggestion happy boosting

Now, while I new that my block could handle a little boost, I was told and have read that it is better to piece together your turbo assembly. Essentially, turbo kits are a waste of time/money.

As for choice in turbos, I've been looking at Garrets as you have suggested, and also Turbonetics. The only aspect I'm really unsure of is what air housing ratio to go with. I've read that .63 AR is practically ideal. Any insight?

it is a good idea to piece it together, it will make the set up more personal! plus they perform better imo. turbo sizing is not as hard as many may think, however it will depend on what kind of horsepower, boost #'s and all out performance you are looking for.

No and yes. Compression of 12.5:1 is much too high. You'll want closer to 9.5:1 or something like that. I'm no turbo guru but 12.5:1 is higher than the B18C5 compression.

However, you are right about higher compression being not too good for turbo aps. The higher the compression, the more detonation you can expect with constant conditions.

might you now be confusing air/fuel ratio with compression? for a boosted car 12.5 is about what you want your a/f ratio to be. there is no such thing as a generic ideal compression.
