What are you trying to replace?

I have completely rebuilt a S1 and a Y1 tranny [both were cable].

I'm interested in this as well. I'm in the process of doing the exact same thing, only it's an S1 instead of Y1. During the rebuild we came across a totally f'ed 1st & 2nd gear slider. Trying to source one has been a huge PITA.

It looks like the original poster is getting some good info, but it's all in PM's. Anybody care to post something for all of us to see?

I have rebuilt both an S1 and a Y1 as far as b-sreies trannys go. I found the best place to source parts from was http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org. The S1 came from an Acura Integra LS/RS/GS Special Edition.

This is what Ive read so far... You can use all of the usdm parts for a 90-91 integra tranny. The only thing you cant change is the gears because they dont make them up here. Ive had two people tell me they have rebuilt there jdm trannies and the only thing they re-used was the gears (duh) I guess the syncros from a ls tranny will work from what Ive been told.... Im very confused but if its been done then that is just what Ill have to do.

I dont understand if I can use ls syncros; why does prostreet advertise for b16 cable syncros? I wonder if they are using the d series syncro myth? I wonder what they are doing. Its supposed to be a honda OEM part that honda carries up here....

Thats all I know really so far.

(Maybe DaX could throughly explain what he told me in a PM about how to figure this out)

DaX- just for the record; you have a jdm y1 and you rebuilt it using usdm parts but kept the jdm gears, correct? All parts were from a 90-91 S1 USDM tranny?

All I did was replace all the bearings and all the rubber/plastic parts which include all the seals and all the oil guide plates. I am 95% sure I ordered all my parts for a 90-91 S1 USDM tranny...what I ended up doing was measuring the bearings I pulled out, and compared these measurements to the ones given on the S1 tranny parts list. I myself haven't replaced synchros yet...mainly because after inspection all mine looked fine, but again I am about 95% sure that synchros from the S1 tranny would fit in the Y1. Remember, if you are going to replace the synchro, you should also replace the hub and collar with the synchro at the same time...buy the "synchro set" which includes all of these.

If you're looking to beef up your synchros, try to find a Gear-Speed dealer...they carry carbon coated synchros for Honda transmissions.

See Ive been told that the syncro has to match up with the gear. Since they dont make the same gears in USA; they wouldnt have the syncros.... (from what i understand)

I wish I would have taken more measurements when I had the trannies apart. Even though the number of teeth on the gears are different [giving the different gear ratios] and the JDM ratios cannot be bought in the USA, I think the bevel on the actual gear where the synchro grabs it is the same dimension. Let me see if I can give Gear-Speed a call and see what they have to say on the matter.

Ok, I just got off the phone with Gear-Speed. As far as synchros, hubs, and selector sleeves...when rebuilding your JDM Y1, you can use USDM S1 parts for this. If you are replacing your synchros, Gear-Speed offers those Carbon Synchros for $90...this only includes the 3rd, 4th, and 5th synchro rings, so you'd have to re-use or salvage a hub and selector sleeve. As long as the points on your sleeve aren't rounded off, you should be fine. Honda designed the synchro ring to take the abuse...it's brass and the sleeve is steel, so the brass synchro ring will usually have the rounded points unless you've been wailing on your transmission and grinding the everloving **** out of it. The worn points are what cause grinding. These carbon synchros have a modified carbon fiber braking surface to give a better grip on the gear [stock setup uses metal on metal contact]. Gear-Speed offer a lot of options for Honda trannies...they even make dog boxes.

So as long as the braking surface on your gear isn't worn out too bad, you can get away with replacing just the synchro ring/hub/selector. I personally have never seen a braking surface on a gear that is so bad it needs replacing...but then again I've only been inside about 6 honda transmissions.
