I just got my b18c1 block with darton sleeves and I want it to look really good. what can I clean it with. I have searched and everyone has a million different answers. I have pics of the block and it's my avatar. can the machine shop that is doing my work clean it, cause I've been told that you can't hot tank the block once it's been sleeved. any help would be greatly appriciated.

clean it with a brush and some degreaser(simple green) or organce cleaner works good for me then if you want use some high temp paint gray looks good as new

thanks for the reply. I'm also looking into painting if but I need to find out more information. This is my first engine build

Clean it with Simple Green and paint it. This is what I did minus the Simple Green (wish I would of used that though). Here are pictures of the first coat. I will take more Saturday.

i highly recommend using high temp gray or aluminum paint it matches very well. You can pretty much go with any color you want. i dotn like dark colors due to not seeing any oil leaks etc..

paint will run you around 4.99 a can at autozone.

Just make sure you don't get any brake clean, brake fluid on the block. Also I used gunk engine degreaser and it just ate the paint and faded everything. Make sure to use a decreaser that is less aggressive such as simple green like some people recommended so your paint job last a long time.

why not brake clean... you mean on the inside... i have cleaned a few blocks with brake clean on the outside to get rid of dirt and exhaust left on the block... im guess you mean on the inside of the block cause it dries whatever its sprayed on out....

The brake clean messes up the paint. Simple green works great.

I mean after the block has been painted. You can use break clean to clean the inside or outside. On my block I used Brake Clean to prep the outside before I painted it. I am just recommending you stay away from brake cleaner and Gunk Degreaser after painting it.

I need to post my motor too. its soooo pretty.I first shot my whole engine with gunk. then I let it sit for about an hour then I shot it again, and then I boiled water and tipped the motor on its side and gave it a bath then I used orange blast and a wire brush. ant it was near perfect. then I let it sit the whole night and painted it all the nest morning.

Can't a block be put in the cleaning machine at the machine shop?

yes a block can be cleaned at the machine shop. That is the best way since it soaks and cleans everything inside and out.

I would say the best and the oldest way of cleaning a block after getting it back from a machine shop is using hot soapy water and a sponge than spraying it with a garden hose. Do that about 2-3 times clean the whole thing inside outside top to bottom and make sure you clean out all of the head bolt holes because that is the spot where you have the most metal shavings in..

Hot tanked or not I always clean a block when it comes back from a machine shop just to make sure that everything is perfecly clean before i start building a engine.
