Default My Holset powered topmount EF hatch

well last wknd i finally got all my turbo pieces on my hatch, i had it running n/a so far this summer while i finished fabbing up all the parts i needed. i have been building this thing for a while now(almost 3 years) so it was nice to get it all together. it still needs some bugs worked out, currently running 450cc injectors for now(on basemap), then i will upgrade to 880cc injectors, buy me a boost controller and see what it will put down.

right now the setup is this;

-b16a head(stock), stock cams, crane cams spring/retainer set, edelbrock intake, stock t.b
-b18a block(stock sleeves) weisco pistons, eagle rods, arp head studs
-S1 jdm b16a trans, phantom grip(race version) ACT XT-R6 clutch, lightened flywheel
-zdyne gold ecu, basemap, 450cc injectors
-custom built topmount, 3" downpipe, 3" exhaust
-2.5" charge pipes
-tial 50mm bov and 38mm wastegate
-precision medium intercooler, t-bolt clamps, vibrant silicone couplers
-holset hx35 w/a 14cm^2 exh

i really like the holset even with the larger 14cm^2 housing, i am currently only running 7-10lbs(i get a bit of creep) i get my first pound of boost by 32-3500rpm and i get the full 10 by just short of 4500rpm.

here is a link to my previous thread;

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1601175

here she is n/a

installing manifold

pic of front mani/wastegate/dumptube

downpipe and open dump(sounds wicked)

couple shots of almost complete

if you look close you can see the filter

she made its debut at the local all japanese car show, got 2nd for best engine swap.

no times or numbers as of yet, it is just running on the zdyne basemap for b16a 1bar map and 450cc injectors. i hope to get my 880cc injectors and a boost controller in the near future and get it tuned.

its great, i like the spool of it for such a big turbo, cost me all of $350cdn, with the wastegate-less 14cm housing.

the driver's side headlight has the lowbeam intact and it works, just the high beam is gone. i'm trying to find out a nice way to cut the glass in the headlight, but i might just forget that idea and make a nice air duct/box for racing.

this holset is from a dodge 5.9L(6cyl)cummins turbo diesel truck

i thought about it but i was under the impression that it does more harm than good in the way of compresser surge?

I run the 9 and think the 12 must be too big. I can't imagine running a 14cm housing. Not at all.

Make sure to post up some results when you get the larger injectors and boost controller.

do you mean physical size? the numbers are hx-35w w/a wastegateless 14cm2 exh housing

the 14cm2 is not bad at all, i was a little worried about late spool, but full boost at 4500rpm is what i was after. i still have some room to improve that though, being as i have one of the weakest set of cams for the vtec heads.

i also wanted to go split scroll on the manifold, but space restraints for 2 wastegates and the headache involved i just went with the traditional collector. might be something i have to change in the future.

the thing i love about this turbo is i have tons of room to grow with it, if i ever get to the point where i am maxing the turbo out, its relatively easy to upgrade the compressor wheel for more power.

i am kinda worried about the 38mm gate though, i just have the half bar spring in there and i am not sure if its up to the task of controlling the boost for this big turbo, would a stiffer spring help out the bit of creep i am getting? or is a 44mm the answer?

that's what I was getting at^ I doubt it will change anything signifigant except for the sound, but at least you have it to put back in...

i run a single 38mm gate and w/ the stock exh it holds rock steady at 8psi wg spring....but soon as i open up the 3" open dp...itll spike to around 10psi....not bad considering the fact...but a holset isnt very efficent under 10psi anyways and once i dial in my avcr itll hold wherever i set it to...heh

nice setup btw

Holsets FTW!!!

And their Honduhs, Rob.

Clean ED chassis. That is a hard turbo to fit in that small space, and you made it look very simple. Solid work.

thanks, when i was measuring it up at first i was going to do the traditional low mount, but it almost seemed like more work. shes a tighty though

i might have to try removing the silencer for kicks, be interesting to see what it sounds like.
