MSD BTM, how much degree retard at 16psi?
Ok..is it even worth getting the btM? 'Well anyways, i asume it'll help in detonation so...if i get a btm, how much degree per pound would i need to set it at? My ignition timing is stock rite now and i'm gonna be running 16psi. If i set it at 1degree,...wouldnt it be 16degrees retarded at 16psi? Is that a little too much? Any help would be greatly appreciated..thanx

the BTM unit retards PER pound of boost it reads..
eg.
it can retard as much as 0.25 degrees per psi
u run 16psi itll retard 4 degrees....

What compression are you running? If you ahve a 9:1 engine stick with 0.25 deg per pound and watch the AF and EGT. If you are running a higher compression engine 10:1 or higher, you will need more retard. I ahve never seen anyone run more that 1.5 deg of retard, but 16 psi could force you higher depending on your fueling setup.
i.e.
Richer mixture=less retard needed.
Leaner mixture=more retard needed.
Here is the cool part: The more retard you run the less power you make BUT the faster the turbo spools due to the wasted energy in the exhaust. So there are some trade-offs.
Too much retard will cause a high boost miss which is bad.

Yea...i'm running 9:1 compression. So i should set it at .25? Ok, i had it on that because i didnt want too much retard. Thanks for the help.

Ok, I am kinda confused. Doesn't the MSD BTM retarded the timing per pound of boost, which is set/controled buy the **** inside the car. All the BTM's I have seen have a **** that reads 1,2, and 3. For example: If I have the **** set to "1" and I am running 8psi. of boost the timing should be retarded 8 degrees. Is this correct? I would really appreciate some understanding. Thanks.
