Motor Build. SOHC VTEC compression question...
I am considering building my D16Z6. GE Sleeves, pistons, rods. The motor will not be dialed in by a good tuner since there are no pros on island, but it will be semi tuned. A buddy offered me pistons and rods for a good price. They are arias pistons 10:1(must be customs) I had planned on going with 9:1. Do you think the 10:1 would be too high? It would be a daily driver on 92 octane, so the lower ratio sounded better to me because of less change of detonation. Boost will be 15-20 psi. Go 9:1 or go ahead and go 10:1 since my block will be sleeved? Thanks for any help you can give.

Increasing your static compression from 9:1 to 10:1 will give you more power gains. Mainly the horsepower gains are directly due to the increased amount of torque the engine will produce on a higher compression ratio. You wont have to run as much boost to make the same amount of power with the 9:1. I'd go for 10:1. I am using 9.8:1 Endyn rollerwaves in my GF's d16z6 block.

That is good to know.. I was looking to do 9:1 in my spare Y8 motor.
But I am not getting sleeves.. Just rods and pistons.

BTW, sleeving isnt essential. I decided against sleeving on the project d16z6 that i am building. I just dont feel that 400whp justifys the use of an aftermarket sleeve.

on a side note the higher compression will also allow the turbo to spool slightly faster, right?

can you give me more info on how exactly you plan on tuning this street 300-400whp D16 w/out sleeves... Man that would be scary as hell driving around in that...... I'd be super peranoid about getting into the boost range. hhehheh
fill me in bro

Boost will be 12-14lb on pump, 20-22psi on race. The block is from a 92 civic si with 180,000 on them. It doesnt bother me a bit of the mileage. I had the block overbored .5mm to clean up the sleeve, and ordered the overbored pistons as well. Everyone buys into the hype that you need sleeves. Sleeving is extra insurance, but if you arent detonating then you arent going to crack a sleeve. The d-series sleeves are made from the SAME material as the b-series sleeves, therefore they are just as strong. The b-series have been pushed over 600whp without failures on drag cars.
I am going to make around 350whp on pump very easily with the components that I have choosen.

Hmm, good info Boosted Hybrid...
Kinda makes me consider NOT sleeving my engine. Plus i've got a spare block laying around anyway if something DOES go wrong!
Decisions decisions....

Why is it that say CP and SRP pistons only offer 9:1 or 11.5:1(I think so) for the Z6? and not any in the 10:1 area. not enough demand maybe? Or because everybody boosting a sohc goes 9:1? Thanks.

Here's the only deciding factor, for me at least, as far as 9/10:1.
Managment.
You said it was being tuned so I'm guessing some sort of stand alone + Wideband dyno time? in this case 10:1 is fine
anything less and I would suggest lower C:R.
just my $.02
BTW, what are you doing for management?

I'm going to use the VAFC and 440's until I do the build. then either hondata or aem ems.

Boostedhybrid I"m looking forward to seeing your hatch put down some numbers.
right now I'm running arias with a compression of 8.7:1. fuel management is Uberchip and 450cc's with a mustang 8cyl fuel pump, 14b turbine and starion IC. I'm hopig to push 12psi on the stock rods with my fuel management.
However I'm already think about next years up grades.
valve springs and a cam
rods
larger turbine and another manifold with external wastegate.
I was serisouly considering sleves, but I'll wait to see how you make out. My goal is 300hp over the next couple of years.

The z6 block and tranny arent going in my hatchback, there going in my girlfriends. Its her set-up that I have been building for her over the past year. My hatchback has a 2.0L gsr fully built and tranny.

Re: Motor Build. SOHC VTEC compression question... (boosted hybrid)
hmmm this got me thinking... say my stock compression raito is at 8.8:1, would it be considered safe to build my motor with a 10.0:1 compression ratio with hondata boosting 14.7psi daily and 20 psi at the track??
