Default motor build break in

i just started up my car its warmed up a few times ive had a ton of issues since i built the motor. question is do you g uys experience oil burning upon start up of the car ? i talked to 2 other people. ones a shop that i know builds motors and said usually should be any sort of smoking upon start up of a new motor.

anotehr person gave me told me his car smoked a lil for the first few miles of his build up.

any ideas ? i warmed it up a few tiems already. but like i said ive had problems and werent able to drive the car. i took it down the street half a block adn came back around and noticed lots of blue smoke.

yea sometimes the rings take longer to seat than others. Build oil pressure, start the vehicle, let it idle till warm, let it rev at like 2k rpm for 30mins, then take it out and do pulls on a highway or dyno to set the rings.

Mine was broke in on the dyno with ND30 oil. We did some partial throttle tuning while varrying the speed. After that we layed into it and fully tuned from there. Perfect compression when finished. I can't remember any smoking other than it being a little rich and I am running an open DP.

hrmm cant say im too happy right now considering i finished the exhaust and took it down the street. it was ok at first. no smoke. then i turn around *( half a block* and come back. and pull into the bay and notice TRAILS of smoke behind me. white this time. i think it was dark cant tell exactly. then the idle gets low and suddenely dies. crank. wont start. cranks over but doesnt catch. let it sit for 45 seconds crank again. starts up. lots of smoke.

i let it idle for about 10-15 minutes and the fan goes off a few times. blows the smoke aroudn everywhere and eventually the smoking went away. no overheating. at the end of the session i take out the dipstick. clean

i take off the oil cap. hrm........ lil milky .. under the cap.

im starting to get sick of this **** real fast.

damn, i couldnt even get my motor to stay idle when i first started it until the rings started to seat....any time i let off the throttle it would die (this is a tuned map, motor was same spec)

and smoke=bad

I don't think i've ever had a freshly built motor smoke on inital startup. Good machine work and assembly are key.

My break in method consists of heat cycling the engine once, changing the oil, then let her rip on the dyno, and i've never had an engine where the rings didnt seat.

The most important thing for a fresh engine is to make sure the car is running properly after first startup. check oil pressure, air/fuel, engine temp. If the engine is stumbling, smoking, any kind of abnormal behavior, shut the engine off immediately and fix the problem.

project dc2- pull the valvecover and if the oil is milky white all over everything then its time to pull the head back off. hopefully water in the cylinders isn't what caused your engine to stall

When I first started the motor it blew a little smoke the first few seconds of the start up, then it went away and it hasn't come back in over 400 miles. I had it idling for maybe 30mins with non detergent oil, I got all the air out of the cooling system, set the timing, set the idle and then I revved it a few times to 2.5 rpm. No smoke came out and compression was at 180psi in all cylinders, I let it cool down and took the oil filter out and dropped the oil pan. I basically did what TitanDarin did and I really didn't think it would be that easy. Now I have 435 miles on the motor, with a tuned base map, the compression went up to 190, and it feels awesome. Oh, and it hasn't burned any oil, at all.

i always think mine went away until i go down the block and come back. then ill usually blow a ton of smoke......

imma try a leakdown and comp test tomarrow and maybe try to drive it around a little more to see whats up .

We let mine run for 30 mins to warm up and start to seat the rings, changed the oil, ran it easy for about 100-150 miles, then changed the oil again and shortly after beat the **** out of it.... I was tryin to break it in 1000 miles, but after only 200 that stupid mustang just had to rev at me.... after another 500 miles, we changed the oil and carefully examined it, all was well, and here i am a year and a half later still running strong...

break ins are over rated IMO

Sounds to me like your headgasket isnt sealing. You running an O.E.M. head gasket? Also what motor did you build? If you do pull off the head check the valve job that the shop did.You should beable to pour water into the intake and exhaust ports without any water leaking out.Never believe a shop that will tell you that the valves need broken in to seal because thats bull. Also check the ring gap when the head is off.Only 3 things to check HEADGASKET-VALVES-RINGS.Oil burning is BLUE smoke Coolant is always White smoke overheated or broken motor Black smoke.

Absolutley zero smoke on startup for me as well, well except for the grease and grime burning off the manifold fro the install. I let it sit and idle for 20-30 mins, changed the oil, kept the revs under 3500 through 500 miles, changed the oil again and went Mobil 1, then around 800-900Mi I started getting on it harder and taking it into boost. So far so good

havent done any comp tests but i THINK it might be alright now .. minimal smoking. some smokni out the tailpipe but none from the engine bay. not that much at least. small trail here n there nothing huge like a cloud of smoke like yesterday. gonna clean it up and tie up loose ends and break in the motor. gonan carry the towtruck dudes number in case though.
