Default ... manual boost controller - faster spool up

... this might be a stupid newbie question, but here goes:

... lets say you have your wastegate set to 7 psi... is it possible to set you mbc to 5 psi so that you spool up to 5 psi faster the than without the mbc... then between 5-7 psi... let the wastegate build/dump boost as it normally does...

... thanks for taking a look

Yeah its very possible and let me tell you it makes a huge difference.

I have a home made MBC which works exactly like you want yours to. Set it a PSI lower than your WG so that once that boost level is reach then the waste gate accuator has to open the rest of the way by its self thus making that max boost come slower once the MBC opens.

You can't set the PSI less then what the spring in the wastegate is set at.

Yes you can. it just won't make less boost than the wastegate is set at.

if you set the MBC to 5psi and your wastegate is set to 6psi, you will spool up to 5psi much faster, then it will go up to 6psi after that, at the normal rate. it just stops the wastegate from opening prematurely.

Both of you are right, NO you can't setup a MBC to have the wastegate OPEN at a lower psi then what the spring is rated at.

BUT, You can setup a mbc at say somewhere less then 7psi and it will keep that ***** of a wastegate's mouth SHUT until near or at full boost, I have mine setup that way and it cut down spool time considerably, noticable on the butt dyno. I use a Joe P MBC I'm not a fan of bleeder type mbc's its all about that ball spring :D

just get the joep mbc and keep it set on 7psi... your motor can handle it. yes, it does spool noticably faster.

Okay...tell me this. How the heck do you set your boost for 5psi when the spring in the wastegate is set at 6psi?? The boost gauge wont tell you where 5psi is at cause the wastegate is holding boost at 6psi. Sorry but it doesnt make any sense to me. You cannot set the boost controller to lower than wastegate spring pressure.

I found that when i had my MBC, it spooled a bit faster then my AVCR. reason being, i think that the EBC starts to open the WG BEFORE the desired boost is met, so it will build slower. say that you set it for 7lbs, it will start to open the WG at around 6.5, and make it tougher to build that last half pound.

the MBC stay closed completely until the set level is reached. just my thoughts, i could be way off, but it did feel like my car spooled faster with the MBC.

anyone else feel this?

i think ur supposed to screw it in slowly until it doesnt shake anymore. then it should be set to about the same boost as ur wg.

maybe im thinkin of another mbc tho and no the joe p tho. cant be positive. anyone can confirm or deny this?

oh yea, and understand ur idea of setting the mbc lower than the wg, but how will u be able to tell that the mbc is actually at 5 if ur wg is at 7? it'll be definitely under 7, but u can't be sure how much under it is. unless u have some technique or trick i haven't heard of yet. if u do, please share cuz i've been thinkin bout this for awhile

Yes, it is in the duty cycle parameters. On/ Off control is a compromise between approach speed and ultimate control at/around threshold. Decrease one, increase the other and vice-versa

The AVCR operates on ON/OFF control (only parameters are duty cycle which is a half assed form of deadband) so therefore it only knows open or closed wastegate. In reality, the wastegate will not open or close instantaneously, as it is a mechanical device. The AVCR cannot really compensate for this, so spool time is delayed somewhat

sooooo is it safe to say a mbc helps the turbo spool up faster than a ebc?
