I 3rd the vote on a bearing issue then the rods breaking afterwards. I would think that it would take but a few seconds after the bearing failed.

That's an oil film/bearing failure not a rod failure. You can see the heat stain in the rod.I've seen rods break in the beam and still had a perfectly usable bearing in it.What you see there is secondary damage.Rod bolt failures usually don't show any heat marking.I have seen rods that couldn't maintain their (round) shape under high rpm loads and pinch the oil film off at the parting line and in turn spin the bearing.Race bearings are actually more prone to this type of failure as they are less elliptical.Torque up the other rods and check for out of round. If they are more than .0006" or .0008" out of round than this might have happened. It's not uncommon to see .0003" or .0004" out of round in a good set of rods after some hard runs.

Looks like a combination of a few things, bad gas, bad bearing, were the clearences to much on the rod bearings? you have a good tuner, what klind of timing were you running? Also could have just been a bad rod. ive never seen a manley do that. **** Geoff at fullrace runs cheapo eagles liek me and he is making over 700whp on those babies so i would assume its in the tune bad gas, bearing or rod.

Good luck figuring that one out. Is there any signs of eccesive heating?

that data log was the burn out not the run.......and yes thats the black civic at bradenton... there are more pictures that are not on the site.... alll the bearings look new ... all the journals look good on the crank except for the one that got messed up... i am not saying that the manley rods are not good i am just trying to find the cause of the problem so that it does not happen again.....alll the clearence were good and done perfessionally....

The only other thought would be some debris left inside the crank, during assembly, came loose and started the whole process of failure.

Man that sucks.

I think stated bearing failure was the culprate. I rember back in the day building a motor and we nicked the bearing jernal on the crank just a tiny little mm high dent cause the motor not to move at all.It turned like 90deg and just seized up. Either lack of oil, bearing clearence too close. Or like earl said piece of alum, steel went threw the oil jurnal and started to damage.

There was no bottom end Knock or anything ??????

damn that's some carnage

i had a simalar break happen...it was with a n/a lsvtec....they were eagle rods

it's was tuned by a good tuner...super clean build

prob was the cap bolt was way over tourqed
it froze the bearing...this happened within 3500miles after the build.....i

i'm still fighting with the builder to this day....3yrs later...i haven't received a penny...

and have a 4000 dollar paper weight sittin in my storage

Sounds like the tuners fault.

manley is prolly the strong rod out there for honda applications, from what the pictures show is that the rod bolt backed out just a bit and from all the rotating mass took the cap off and then the main pice off the big end, and the rest is history . manley is really good about there products so i think you can return it and show them what happened but hopefully they send you out a set free of charge

Well it does look like a rod bolt failure..... i hope manley well respond to this failure and do sent me a sent a rods... god knows that i could use it to help my rebuild go faster and less costly....seeing that it is going to cost me about $2500 to $3000 to sleeve, rods, pistons, block crank, and shipping.....

I saw this hatch at the tamparacing event on sunday, Pretty sick setup!!! You were running some nice times, until the manley rod decided to call it quits and leave the block. I was wondering what happened. Good luck.

My vote goes to spun the rod during the burnout, then it continued to heat up and seized up thus chuckin the rod through the block. if it was a rod bolt failure why would it have spun the rod like so?

Yea, Im thinking you were not getting the oil your needed to that bearing. Could be derbies as earl already stated of the clearance could have been off.

Did you check the clearances of all the other rods? Post pics of the bearing!

Plain as day that the rod was overheated to hell on the big end. Sorry for your loss.

Glad I went with my Pauters (JUST kidding).
