Default Lifting Head issues: D16

I recently just had my set up completed (D16Y8 @15psi, stock sleeves, no o-ring), and I keep lifting the head and blowing out gaskets. I've used two cometics now with no luck. The head is being torqued down to 65ft-lb, but I've been told to increase that to 75-80ft-lb from other members. I'm wondering if this is safe for the studs to be stretch to that point? I spoke with ARP and they recommened instead of doing a 2 step torquing process, just go straight to the recommened torque setting??

this wont do anything to torque in two-step or not... I had the same problem than you all the last summer before getting sleeved and o-ringed... Now I dont have any problem at all....

I dont know why but D series head have this failure...

15psi shouldnt lift the head,maybe double that...your deck or head surface must be messed up.

I was told they were fine, however, going to re-check to be positive.

I have a problem similar to this. When i hit 16PSI water starts to shoot out of the over flow bottle. I am going to put in a cometic MLS-HP gasket today and see if this help. My motor is a d16z6 that just came out of the machine shop less then 1200 miles ago. The deck was straight as well as the head.

I had the same trouble... water shoots out of the over flow bottle with a brand new gasket and re-surfaced block and head...

Sam Chris told me to get the o-ring on the top of the sleeve for all boosted D16.... I did it and didnt had any trouble even WOT in 5th gears....

I just got of the phone EDYNE and they told me that if you use the Cometic head MLS-HP Gasket that is has the same ring built in to the head gasket. Which they call the fire ring and is .003 thick..... This is the head gasket they sent me and I will be putting it on today. I guess i will find out.

any of you guys using a block guard? maybe the problem is the sleeves moving around....this guy had a welded-in block guard on stock sleeves and was pushing 30psi without popping a gasket ------------>https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=692881

So how safe it is to torque it downover 10ft-lbs over recommened arp specs?

I have a GE block gaurd tack welded into the block. I have pictures that i will put up later.

I'd try going about 5 ft-lbs over to begin with. Also, try putting some copper spray on the headgasket. I lifted my head on nitrous before, we'll have to see what it does on boost this summer.

well I just installed the Cometic HP Gasket with the copper seal spray and torqued it down to 65 in 2 steps. IT is holding 18 PSI so far. I will keep you updated to see if it holds.

elspool . your not supposed to torque the bolts down , your supposed totighten them down to what is it , 40% of their strength or somthin

I don't see how the head could be lifting at that power level if a proper install was done(head resurfaced, block decked, new headgasket, headstuds torqued properly, etc. Sure it's possible, but...

We coated my gasket in copper spray. Not sure if if makes a big difference, but I've never had a problem at ~14psi daily for over 2,000 miles. The head was resurfaced, block decked, Mr. Gasket headgasket and ARP studs when the motor was built. My $.02

i had a problem with stock head bolts , put a cometic and arp's , havent had a problem since.

I garuntee the prob is the head bolts being torqued at 65ft lbs

My bone stock blocks is holding 12psi 215whp no problem, will see how it likes 15psi

yeah i dunno this is the second head gasket on sams car weird. I torque mine to 75ft lbs last year boosted for like a month at 10psi not one prob.

My original set up had the honda OEM head gasket with ARP head Studs. The block was freshly decked as well as the head. It was a new Built motor with a GE block gaurd. The studs were torqed to 60 as stated by ARP. It blew at 16 psi. i talked to EDYNE and they told me to use the Cometic MLS-HP gasket and to retorque right after. I then called ARP and they said at most to torque 65 and not to try antything over 65 with ARP molley. So installed the Cometic with a 65 lbs torque and it seems to be holdong at 16 psi.

i got the mls too i love it , that built in fire ring is nice
