just replaced rod bearings, there is a small knock for about 3-5 seconds upon startup
any ideas? Like i said, started knocking so we towed it from the spot i started to hear it. pulled the oil pan to find i spun a rod bearing. crank looked and felt fine. we replaced the rod bearings and changed the oil a fews times. now when i start the car up, there is a knock for about 3 seconds and it goes away and all is well. i drove around the block and there wasn't any knock. oil pressure was fine. i cant think of anything?
plz help. thanks in advance.

I think your oil pump is taking a ****. My B18B has an old oem oil pump on it and when i crank it after sitting overnight there is a slight rod knock for about 1.5 seconds...who hasn't heard a honda do that though? I think its a weakening pump that can't flow enough at first crank.

thats what we were thinking. oil pumps dont like ctr pulleys and thats what my car has now. I'm trying to get a gsr crank pulley. my oil pressure seems to be fine. any other ways of checking to see if its the oil pump.

man if thatshit knocks for just a couple of seconds everytime and then is perfectly fine and runs fine, then im sure its a crappy oil pump. what else could it realistically be.

CTR pulleys are notorious for creating unwanted vibrations in the oilpump.

yeah. im thinking its the oil pump as well because it makes sense. when i first heard my car knock, we stopped and got out and inspected. i turned it over and back on again to hear the knock for a second and for the first couple seconds the knock was loud and got quiet. now that the rod bearings were replaced, the knock is loud for about 1-2 seconds and than it completely is gone. i drove the car around the block a few times and even popped into vtec and it still was fine. i let it cool for about an hour and started it back up, again, there was the knock for about 2-3 seconds and went away.
anyone else with info or ideas please post!

Your best bet is to take the pan/strainer/tray off and inspect all bearings and re torque them to OEM spec if you are still using OEM rods, if you`re using aftermarket rods make shure you torque them to manifucturer specs! Which rod bearings did you use? did you measure the crank where the rod bearing spun? Also what`s the story behind the spun rod bearing? because If your engine had a problem and it spun a bearing you just fixed the rod bearing, the problem why it spun is still there!

say what you want but if a bearing was bad it wouldn't just knock for 3 seconds and be done.

oh yea? why wouldnt it then huh?
are you talking with experience? ...because i sure am. the bearing(s) clearance is too loose and this is the sign of early bearing failure.

yes i have had bearings slightly knocking and couldnt figure out why EVEN after replacing all of them. Replaced the pump and FIXED. It could be either way.
