Default Just How Important Is An O2 Sensor?

I'm having one hell of a time getting my 4 wire working.
I have a VX Harness and i'm trying to figure out what wires to use in order to get this bosch sensor working.
I'm actually considering running without an O2 sensor at all...
Is this crazy?

BTW. It's in a '92 hatch w/D16Y8 swap Running boost
Thanx for any imput

Wasn't the VX the one with the lean burn and the wideband o2? Is your Bosche a wideband?

Yeah that's the one.
And No the Bosche is not a wideband it's only a 4 wire
But now i'm using the EX ECU and it throws a code with the wide band 5 wire in there.
Hence me putting in a replacement 4 wire. In hopes of getting rid of the code.
My main question is.
Other than not running smoothly will it mess anything up since i'm running boost.

yes the ECU goes into safe mode running with less than optimum performance because it knows something is wrong and it is sort of protecting itself...
