Default Junkyard Turbos!!!

Hiyas! I have a friend who can custom make me a turbo manifold pretty damn cheap. Now I just gotta find a good junk yard turbo right? Would a t3/t4 hybrid or a t4 would be good? Someone told me that the turbos used on Volvos are t4... anyone have any experiences/suggestions? Or any other turbos that would be good to look for on a junked car? I also was thinking about snatching the intercooler off a volvo too...

Don’t go with a straight T4 turbo. First of all that's way too big, and I don't even know if some of those cars at the junkyards have them. Anyhow, you should do a compressor map and see which turbo is good for your engine. Also what PSI will you be running at? If around 6-10, I suggest a straight T3 60 trim with standard exhaust wheel. You can get those off the Ford Turbo coupe Thunderbird. Make sure it's a manual tranny, cause the autos have different size turbine housings.

You have a 1.6L so you could use a t25 from a 94+ DSM. The boost is efficient if you decide to stay under 8 psi. You don't even have to go to the junkyard, just click on http://www.dsm.org and buy a low mile turbo off one of the guys who went 16G. I would bet $100 would be the most you spend.

Ok... How much boost should I have dialed in on a stock b16 engine? I plan on upgrading internals later.

dont forget about the 2.2 daytonas their hairdryers make good power too. old 240 turbo volvos use light pressure garret, not as big as t4 as I remember. you could also grab something off of a truck, Hino's use t4's (water cooled), all the rayjay's , Holsetts come off trucks and farm equipment too. There was also a shelby dodge shadow that used a bigger turbo than the Daytona, ford mustang SVO used a t4 i think. you can also grab any little t25 or smaller off VW, SAAB has some really nice T25 and bigger on their old 9000 series. you may almost be able to get a thumper size turbo off a caterpillar or desert twin diesel hummer.

there are no cars with T4's. the volvos all use small T3's. the turbo from any 2.3 L turbo ford would be your best bet.

You are all wrong. T3's on SVO's and saabs. Dont use any diesel turbos, they have way different maps, think about it, they redline at like 3K or so. T4's will be too much lag.....

My info came from memory, so it does not serve me correctly. In any case some diesle turbos may well be a good choice if sized correctly, just becasue they redline early does not mean they will not spool beyond that mark, point in question wouldn't that be a good thing that they are able to spool so early. the original poster does not want to size his turbo but come close by getting the turbo and then making it work, not getting the turbo for his setup. I love seeing these "abortion" cars on the road, a guy i know put a RAYJAY industrial machine turbo on his 351 block mustang and blows everyones doors off, the thing spools way down low at around 2300rom.

Sure, not updated yet, but here it is:
http://thenew.gamesbbs.com/~turbosi/

A friend and I wanted a low-buck turbo system and we are nearly there. He went Zdyne (custom ECU) I am going FMU. Right now it drives good, but I need to get the 10:1 disc for the FMU and upgrade the fuel pump. My parts list will be on there pretty soon.

Check it out.

Yep, too rich with the 12:1.

I got a 10:1 coming soon. I will be out of country for the rest of October so no point in hurrying.

Yeah, we are lazy. My parts list was recently updated. In November we are hitting the dyno with both cars. I just got to finish my install. It's just too much stuff happened too quickly.
