Default Intercooler Sizing

Knowledgeable gentleman,

Can see what other ppl are running, just wanted to see whether anyone has any other input. Power goals - 300 BHP on stock b18c4. Gt2871r, Sheepey built mini ramhorn, 560cc inj, 3" exhaust, mapped on p30 with crome. Street car.

Looking at my IC set up .. 2.5" diameter piping, with the core being, 560mm x 180mm with 63mm inlet & outlet. I think this converts to 22" x 7" with 2.5" ..

This seems quite small to what some run, am i going to encounter high intake temps?

Thoughts/experiences much appreciated as always.

Grant.

This will help you most. Its not just about size, its the build quality and construction of the intercooler. Giving a size only gives a small amount of information as to if its ok. The rest understanding they type of I/C you have. So.. take a read, then look at the options and judge for yourself.

Intercoolers!! What to get?

Good luck.

It really comes down to core design and efficiency. Most ebay intercoolers fail horribly in this area.

Treadstone seems to have decent intercoolers for the money, much better than eBay, minshimoto, precision, and similar china cores.

For the "best" core it's hard to beat Bell, PWR, Garrett, etc. They aren't as cheap as other options but when you price the cores they aren't terribly expensive for the quality you get.

I've had a PWR core for the last 10 years and it's still going strong.

Neukin also makes direct fit intercoolers (evidently they have hangars, so you don't have to **** with cutting or welding anything). They're made with Garrett cores, which are on point. They don't list a price on their website, and they DO list a 3-4 week turnaround time, so give them a call.

Precision no longer uses Garrett cores. They source theirs from china now.

Also last time I checked Neukin is actually out of business. Alex had a horrible fire either last year or in 2013 that totally destroyed his shop and everything in it. To make matters worse he didn't have insurance on the contents.

But at the time of the fire he had moved away from automotive fabrication and started focusing on things like solar panels, electric motors, for automotive use.

From what I recall I own one of the last manifolds he made before shiftin his focus and the shop fire. I would contact him through his site before placing an order because like I said I'm certain he closed unless something has changed.

I don't know why he didn't kill the site. Possibly to show potential investors his product line.

So no more Neukin parts unless a 3rd party distributor has any.

Like mentioned ATP sells Garrett cores with cast end tanks. The Garrett cores are extremely efficient with minimal pressure drop. ATP offers 3 Garrett cores with end tanks already welded on. The 400hp, 600hp, and 900hp cores. Other cores will require custom fabricated end tanks. ATP offers other cast end tank designs and sizes but you'd have to check if they make a precast end tank to fit a certain size core.

And Spoolin, since we're linkdumping.

Intercoolers * FMIC Piping, Spoolin Performance

They have Garrett cores with ATP end tanks or Garrett end tanks, Precision units (which, as wantboost already mentioned, Chinacores), and their own bar and plate units. They don't list what core they use, but for the price tag, I'd bet dollars to donuts they aren't Garrett cores.

I talked with someone at neukin about a year ago inquiring about a manifold. It sounded like he was trying to rebuild his business at that time. However he declined to make a manifold due to the jig being lost in the fire. Maybe things have changed since then IDK. but guy seemed like a really stand up guy. Didn't try to steal my money and not make a manifold....like some of these other guys

over the years you can just tell from the business model.. When it's just too cheap to be true, ..it is. That's why we don't use eBay to purchase these important items.. Too many fly by night joints

It looks like a copy of a Garrett core at first glance. Without seeing the actual fin design on the charge air side there's no way to tell.

Yeah..That's not a real Garrett to say the least, bu. I wouldn't gamble on that either way for your goals regardless.

Without wanting to sound like a complete novice, whats the "gamble" with a cheaper IC like the one i posted above? Leaks? Poor cooling? Lots of pressure drop? Or something more sinister?

Yes to all of the above. Very easily. You could be tuned for a certain pressure range, with too much pressure drop because the intercooler isn't efficient and it would feel like the car isn't doing what it's capable of compared to one with an efficient core
