Default intercooler question

im just starting to get together parts for a turbo b16 build. im hoping to make 350 to 400hp i found a good deal on a new precision intercooler its rated for 350 so my question is should i take up the good deal and see what happens or should i just go ahead and get a bigger intercooler. if i do make closer to 400 what are the chances this intercooler will accomodate that?

Usually I/C's are rated for an average of CFM, PSI or HP level. 400WHP? Your good to go with that Precision! Consider your turbos A/R's and I/C piping as well.

also if you wanna make 350-400... your gonna be maxed out at 350 and it wont be cooling as good. Then you will have to buy a new one just to get 50 more horse

No, your not! You will be fine with that I/C at your HP goal level. The I/C does not determine what kind of HP you will make, your tune does, considering different variables. Your I/C serves as a cooling infrastructure but still is a medium, your not limited too much by it, but rather, by CFM. Obviously the car will not perform at it's maximum with a smaller I/C.

True, but he's not going to gain 50 more HP because he added a bigger I/C. Some extra performance can be realized with an intercooler that it's sized correctly but an undersized I/C just below the rated CFM won't hurt him much, probably won't see any difference at all since his HP goal is 350-400.

I didnt say he would gain 50 extra... i was saying if he wanted to gain 50 extra he would have to change it out BC it would be 50 over what its rated....do they give you the CFMs?

Correct. There's no HP GAIN from the larger intercooler, but if that is his true power goal, he will max out the efficiency range of that louvered bar & plate design w/ the 350hp intercooler. I would definately step up the size a bit to the 600hp unit.
