Default Intercooler + cooling fan

I was just sitting here and pondering like I often do and suddenly this thought popped into my head.

I never see anyone running an intercooler with a cooling fan attached? Why is this? Obvioulsy it would cool down the intake charge which is what we are all looking for.

I have a DSM side mount eagle talon intercooler. Its not the bigest thing but it has a nice square face to mount an electric cooling fan which I could trigger with a switch in the cockpit.

Any thoughts?

I've seen it on the Supras that are in the JGTC. If you do it to a front mount IC then the Fan assembly might block more of the ambient air.

say for example the Fan blocks of air and raises the IC temp by 20* degrees, but the fan only lowers that temp about 5 or 10* degrees. so you end up making the IC temps a little hotter. see what I'm getting at? I dont think the gains will be noticeable anyways.

a fans usefullness comes into play when the car is idleing, you do not need to cool the intake charge at idle.

Yeah I'm front mounting the IC so I guess I won't need the fan setup. I figured I'd just check and get some feed back on it.

However I am taking the spray nozzle from my rear hatch and hooking it up front, then it will work off my rear spray activator on my rear wiper switch. Then I can squirt the IC with a cool spray to disapate some heat and lower the intake charge

.

wont do much, be cautious if you plan on adding alcohol to cool, may miss and get something hot!!!!

I'm just going to use my window washer fluid to spray directly on the IC itself thats all.

Water probably won't make a big difference unless it's in large quanities.

Alchohol or Nitrous Oxide is what most people use.

...and really cold. If you're going to do it (I'm assuming it would be for days at the races and such), put ice in there.

Spraying water or washer fluid on intercooler is a pretty stupid idea but its a good idea if your trying to lost some traction when the water makes its way under your tires and itll be good to get you kicked off a racetrack.

I've read in magazines where they use that setup in some forms of racing.

It's actually a good idea, especially if you MIST the water onto the IC - the water itself doesn't do the cooling; it's when it gets the IC wet and then evaporates from the surface that it sucks up a huge amount of heat. A water/alcohol mix works even better. Only problem is that any sort of "misting" nozzle takes a lot of pressure to work right and a windshield washer pump probably won't cut it. Since it's based on evaporation, doing this from a standstill won't do a bit of good, but at speed it will definitely help. And if you only use it at speed you don't have to worry about wetting your precious tires.
