installed turbo kit, but forgot to install FMU!!!!
hello everyone,
my friend got his turbo kit installed in a local shop here in jersey called IMP. he bought a drag turbo kit and a intank fuel pump. the mechanics who installed the turbo kit forgot to install the fmu on the car. he's been driving the car hard for about two weeks. there is no aftermarket injectors nor there is any type of engine management system. once boost kicks in, the AF gauge is all the way red . what do you guys think? was any damage caused to the motor within this time frame? the car also seems to studder alot in low rpm's now. any opinions?

Take it back and have them install the **** and pay for the damages caused to the car...A mechanic should not forgot that.

do a compression/leakdown test and check your plugs and stuff. If I were you I would rip that installer a new one....

Tell them this:
The FMU is a boost dependent fuel pressure regulator. The FMU is used on fuel injected supercharged or turbocharged engines to increase fuel pressure in proportion to boost pressure. It does not control fuel pressure until the engine manifold pressure comes under boost. As the manifold pressure increases, a pressure line from the manifold to the FMU causes the FMU to increase the fuel injector rail pressure. The increased fuel pressure causes the injectors to deliver more fuel to the engine.
Then ask them how the aem adj one does this.

Record the call on tape.
Better, get it in writing!
Don't tell them **** about what an FMU does - if they are stupid enough not to know, then they are stupid enough to arm you with the information you need.

Re: installed turbo kit, but forgot to install FMU!!!! (maingear)
the fuel regulator is a 1:1 ratio witch is not good enough for a stock injector without fuel mangement. The FMU is A 6:1 or 12:1 ratio witch for every pound of boost it raises the fuel pressure 12 lbs. (12:1 raito)

Re: installed turbo kit, but forgot to install FMU!!!! (T3)
Wallace,
Tell them that a 240 cc injector will not support over 200 hp. If its a dual cam motor with a 6-7 psi t3t/4 he is pushing around mid 200hp. An FMU is ESSENTIAL in maintaining a good a/f ratio. Most likely, he cracked a ring. IMP is known for blowing up motors left and right. I have never seen anything fast come out of that place. They charge a lot and do very little. Your boy should of taken his car to BYT or had one of us put on the kit for him.

P.S. Hit me up on the im.

thats horrible. I hope the motor is okay but the low rpm studder ur talking about I have seen before, it may have blown rings. do a compresion/leak down test and go to war with the shop. those guys are IDIOTS!

Re: installed turbo kit, but forgot to install FMU!!!! (rewsnaeht)
Sounds like a mediocre turbo kit installed incorrectly by a bunch of complete idiots on a car driven by someone who knows nothing about turbo setups.....
Which of these was your original problem? Oh, the incompetent shop!
Did he know they hadn't installed the FMU when he got the car back (aka was the FMU still sitting in the passenger seat and not under the hood)? If so, he was an idiot for beating on it.....
Nonetheless, the shop is still responsible, sue them and shut them down so they can't keep ruining innocent hondas.......Those are the kind of people that give turbo hondas the "you can't turbo hondas they'll break" reputation.......

dont feel bad i know someone that payed like 8k for a turbo kit for a 01 Trans Am from a reputalbe place they are called Trubo People they are in the NYC area and they didnt install a FMU
I told him he needs on and he asked them if he needed that and a BTM but they said no your freinds dont know what he is talking about we will just send the ECU out for reprograming for the 10th time and it will only take 3 to 4 weeks each time and it will be ok
At the end they sold him a DFI for 1900 buck and 3500 bucks for labor and it is starting to run better
I think i should have a shop in the NY area to shut this people down

Re: installed turbo kit, but forgot to install FMU!!!! (T3T495GSR)
maingear, your friend went to IMP to get a turbo kit installed... the fmu was part of the kit... IMP forget to install it and fucked up... their bad so it's their responsibility if there are any damages... using an aem fpr instead of an fmu..? ***** please..! we should have a sticky thread to warn consumers about all the bad shops... the shop who installed my turbo kit almost forgot to install the inline fuel pump on my drag turbo kit but since i called them almost everyday to check the status of the turbo kit, i made sure each part was installed correctly (like the boost gauge at the right height, the turbo timer in the right location, etc)...
