ignition timing question w/ turbo...my dist. is all the way retarded...bad?
excuse for this noob question. i know the general rule of thumb is .5 degrees for every lb of boost, but I thought i'd play it safe and do it 1 degree for every lb of boost. so I guesstimated about 6 degrees retard (timing light doesn't have the degree **** or anything) and it was pretty damn close to having the dist. all the way retarded...so i just said the hell with it.
now i thought i was playing it on the safe side...but could this be hurting the engine? the plugs seemed a lil white, i have a autometer a/f (better than nothing, and has saved my *** more than once) and it's been reading nice and rich under boost. The car doesn't drive bad with the ignition timing like this, but if it's what's cauing the white plugs (i dont see how it could???) then I'm going to fix it asap...just need some insight. thanks guys.

good idea...i advanced it a little today (now retarded only about 3 or 4 degrees) but i'll pull the plugs and have a friend take some digi pics, hopefully they look good, sure is a **** load faster

whatch you dont destroy your motor man. Retardin your timing that much brings egt's up. Just be careful

SO in regard to boost and timing... what is the wise/best way to go? I've been told to advance my timing.. this is the first I've heard of retarding it...
I'm running 12PSI, which is 5PSI over stock, and timing is still set to stock. So far no pinging or fouled plugs... anyone have experience with timing and boost that can recommend what's best?

You need to be careful man. You can do some damage messing around with your timing and not even having the right timing light. I don't know your setup, but hondas run like **** with 6 deg. of base timing out. If you have a programmable ecu then you can take timing out under boost and it will work fine. Otherwise, leave your timing about 14-16 deg. unless you are running over 8psi or so. Again, i don't know your setup so this is a rough estimate.

common misconception. white plugs arent necessarily a sign of being too lean.

right now it's at 5psi, but in a couple weeks when i have the intercooler and new fuel system in (smc, 450's and walbro pump) I'm going to put the stock actuator back on which will be at most 10 psi i believe....what do you suggest the timing be set up for this? on a d16a6
