Default I need help with piston ring gap

Guys,

Here is the instructions that came in with my Supertech 9.5:1 84mm pistons. This is my first time building my own engine.

I am shooting for 400whp and wanted to know with which factor I should go with.

Moderate turbo/Nitrous

Turbo / Nitrous race only

3.307 X .0050 = 16536
3.307 X .0065 = 21495

If you go by that sheet its telling you to do 16 top and 21 bottom

What info are you looking for?

How are you going to file the rings? Pay special attention to the gap orientations

Dont touch the oil rings

Keep everything really clean.

Once on the pistons add oil to the bore and rings then install them

Use a wiesco ring compressor

Make sure the valve reliefs are the correct way

The tang on the bearings and rods always face the exhaust side

if you look on the sheet it shows different gaps for moderate turbo and turbo/nitrous race. I am not sure which one

At the bottom of the list of multipliers thats a really loose gap.

Thats for motors getting pushed to the edge. Tons of heat and they need more ring gap to account for the expansion of the piston.

Youre just going to turbo so use the 2nd multiplier

If you want to be safe go a little looser

17 and 22

You just dont want the rings to touch. The more power you make the more heat goes into the piston. The more that piston will expand

now if go with the turbo spec .0065

3.307 x .0065 = 2149 top ring

Second Ring
multiply the first gap 21 x 1.25 = 26.25

So basically the pistons gaps will be:

top ring -21
second ring - 26

is this correct? if I was to follow the specs on the sheet provided by Supertech. I just want to make sure my math is correct before I file the rings down.

The math seems right

Also read all the print

On that sheet it says that those gaps and multiplications are very generic and can vary by motor

I always use the evans guide for gaps. Ive never ran supertechs tho so it might be different.

gauge to measure the "gap" in the ring. The top compression ring for the CP pistons needs to be sized between 0.017-0.021". The formula for sizing the top and bottom compression rings is bore size (in inches) x 0.006", and then add 0.004 for the secondary compression ring gap. Using the formula, my top ring gap was 0.019." My feeler gauge set was not made in sizes such as 0.019", so a combination of 0.015" and 0.004" feeler gauges are used together in

Another question is what kind of P2W clearance are you running?

I will get those measurements tomorrow. I was just trying to figure out the correct ring gap based on the formula provided by them

Technically

You set your ptw gap then measure the bore then set your rings

84mm with a .0035 and .0045 gap is a different bore size
