i hae a prob wth my valves always tapping,,(i keep re-adjusting them,,but they always mess up again
u can see in my sig what i have
its all stock internals
well,,i have adjusted my valves 3 diff times within about 5000 miles
i dont mind adjusting them,,just wanna figure out a way to make it stop
only 1 time i miss shifted,,and i think thats what caused thevalves to tap
,
but all the other i have been racing and it ran ,,and pulled fine,no mis shifts,,
and after i slow down,,i hear the valves tapping again
so i take it back home
my rev limiter is set at 7500 rpm,,but i usually shift around 7200 or so,
what could b the prob???
should i do some internal buildup on it??
what would u recommend to look into???
it runs great other then,,the valves tapping every couple thousand miles
thanks mike

You need to check the tension on your timing belt. If there is a lot of slack in the belt because the belt is stretched it will cause the valves to be noisy. Also, I'm assuming you adjusted the valves when the engine was cold and you used the proper feeler guages?

well the timing belt is nice and tight
and iv got the right feeler guages for the Intake and exhaust
.003-.005 for intake,and
.006-.008 for exhaust
,,my motor isa b18a1
i adjust the to .003 I,,and .006 for exhaust,,,should i try in the middle,???
.004 I,,and .007 for exhaust??
just wondering
also,,i let the car site about 2 hours before i did it
i just adjusted them now,,
and only the #1 cyl valves were off,,
,,and i only adjusted the 2 Intake side valves,
one valve nut had backed off alot,,and shook around alot,,and the other was a lil too snug
now car has no tapping
do u guys use any sylicone,,or honda lube for the edges of the valve cover??
i got a new valves cover gasket the 1st time i did the valves,,but its still fine
but wondering if your putting any lube,,or sealer on the gasket before re installation
thanks mike

You can use a small amount of HondaBond on the corners if you want.

I would stop driving until you fix the problem.
My valves did the exact same thing; It would tap, so I would do a valve adjustment, after a short time, it would tap again. I thought nothing of it and just kept re-adjusting the valves. Well that one day finally came....SNAP! I was just barely cruising at 35mph, not even on the gas when two valves snapped and pretty much destroyed my cylinder head.
The reason why they tapped was because they were bent and the valve tips were "mushrooming." I misshifted once also and I think that bent the valves ever so slightly and it just kept getting worse as the miles went by.
You don't want this:
Do a compression and leakdown test to see if they are bent before its too late bud.

Can you distinquish between the valves tapping and your injectors? Loud injectors sound awfully close to tapping valves...

no,,i dont think i can tell between the injectors,,and valves tapping
,but every time i hear the tapping,,,,i go and take the valve cover off,,nd at least 1 or 2 valves have backed off,,and r loose
i have done a comp test,,and 3 out of the 4 r the same,,,
,,only 1 is lower,,,but only by about by 7 psi
i think fully cold,,they r around 185 psi
s there a easy way to check if i have bent valves??
ill have to look into a leak down test,,dont know who would do it in my area
the valves only start tapping after about 2 hours or so of just cruisin, mostly after i get on it,,or redline it,
i thought maybe it was more likely to happen cuz it was really hot,,or something,,
should i look into any kinda internal build up??
what kinda intenal parts,,are gonna get me some nice gains,,
thanks mike

Mike,
You should go ahead and change out the valves just to be on the safe side. While you have the head off, you might want to change springs and retainers..

Also lose rocker arms will make the same noise and make sure you have the timing set right or you could be hearing spark knock
Bout to go adjust the valves on my a6 just had the head off and port and polished the **** it is running smooth but I can hear slight bit of chatter.
