How serious is it to upgrade valve spring retainers?
i have a b18c1 im in the process of building for a turbo....i want to achieve probably 325-350 whp by time im done....
my question is how serious is it to upgrade my valve spring retainers from stock?...i plan on using the skunk2 tuners series springs but my moneys getting tighter and tighter as the days go on and saving the extra 170$ from the retainers would b nice
please leave any suggestions thanks

My advice would be to ditch the cams and put the money towards something better such as the springs and retainers.

Crap, my bad, all I saw was Skunk tuner series when I glanced at the sentence. But yeah, if your going to spend the money on springs then yes get retainers. Not to would be like getting rods but not pistons. Also, no need for the thumbs down.

My whole understanding of upgraded springs and retainers.is they only serve 2 purposes. 1 is they are needed for upgraded cams and the other is if you're tryin to rev higher.

get supertech i got mines for 300 shipped springs and retainers...and they will allow you to upgrade to many different cams...and supertech makes them for skunk2 so your just buying a name...also many 700-800whp cars are using supertech...

waste of time and money for a low whp build. set aside that money for tuning, spare bottom end, beer or strippers as it will be much more useful.

500+ on stock head. You don't need springs and retainers for 300. Just don't rev the wee out of it and you'll be fine.

or not spend the money on useless valve train when stock is more then sufficient and use the money to pay down my mortgage or start a college fund for my kid. there are alot better ways to spend your money then buying parts you don't need.

350whp isnt much but if your running anything bigger than a 60mm turbo your engine wants to rev more than 8k..if you just use the car in the streets then stock is fine but when u want to go down the 1/4 8k rpms isnt enough...unless you want to shift to 5th at the end...

Re: How serious is it to upgrade valve spring retainers?
If the OP started this thread to see if he could skimp on titanium retainer for his 350 whp build, your still gonna say he needs them when he's already said moneys tight. Like I said for his power goal and for his BUDGET stock is fine. Also OP already said he wasn't getting cams and he never mentioned anything about wanting to go past stock rev limiter.

Some people will even argue that stock retainers are better then aftermarket as they supposedly last longer. People say that aftermarket ones **** out around 40k miles, now if or if not thats true is left to debate. Like has been said by people on here save the money and put it towards other things.

exactly. Iv had a few all motor setups with aftermarket valve train and about half of them had some sort of issue with valve train wear whether it was the rockers wearing down or the retainers chipping or the excess noise due to aftermarket valve train. with a turbo motor I like to keep it as simple as possible. think of it this way, with a lower hp motor you make the power with the turbo not the motor. stock B series vtec heads are great up to 500+whp without any issues plus you get to retain the OEM quality and reliability of honda.
