Default How reliable is your boosted engine...?

So, I'm curious, how long has everyone had their engine, boosted?

Looking at building a motor for open track events and thought about going turbo, but don't want to constantly be rebuilding engines.

i had mine for over 2 yrs before I sold it for my new project. it really depends on how well you take care fo your car. basic maintance is NOT a joke. you have to change your plugs and oil a lot or your ruin the turbo. you also have to consider how well is the turbo tunned. if your talking about a basic "buy-bolt-and go" turbo setup and you don;t change anything, they coudl last you for yrs if you take care of your car. if you go higher boosting elvels you have to make sure your car we well tunned for the task. tunning can break or make the car...

build it right the first time and you won't have to keep rebuilding it.

same minus the headgasket problem.

Mine isn't tuned either, im still waiting to put an exhaust on this ghetto "mr officer driving behind me, that's an open downpipe with not cat or exhaust on it, please cite me for as many offenses as possible" open downpipe

i was about to make the same topic......

im also a n00b to the whole turbo scene, and am swapping in a y8 into my 96 hatch.
im going to boost it, so i want to know the basics of matinance(sp?) as in how much more often do i do it, like changing oil, spark plugs, etc.

any other things we should know answer away

Actually I have a question on this matter, wouldn't a s/c be better for those open track events? I'm not sure and was just curious.

A year and few months on a completely stock engine.

0 Problems whatsoever, just stupid stuff like random exhaust leaks, rebuilt the turbo (I boguht it used, and it leaked a little oil).

My engine is willingly fed, not forced. She loves it

I see a mixture of responses (sorry for replying so much later).

I used to have a '88 Supra turbo and didn't have many problems with it, was just wondering about aftermarket kits.

I'm not a fan of superchargers on smaller output engines (especially the JRSC), something about an underpowered engine using a portion of it's limited power to turn a supercharger just doesn't settle well for me.

However, a turbo isn't as instaneous...but, i'm sure tuning would do wonders.

Hmm, I guess i'll stick to leaving it NA, seems easier and cheaper to maintain/race.

Thanks again for the replies!
