How necessary is a Turbo Timer?

Hey guys I just got my turbo set up going. Its a garrett t3/t04e 57 trim .63 a/r. Is it necessary to get a turbo timer. Before I shut the car I have let it idle for about a minute just incase. What is the point of the turbo timer? Should I get one?

ok sounds good. as far as oil what would you recomend. I have a b16a making 325whp. I am using mobil 1 synthetic 5w30. Should I switch to a higher weight oil like a 20w50? I have heard that recomended before. Thanks

I do almost ALL short Trip driving 6 miles each way to work and I hop in take it easy for a while but as soon as im in and the car is on im gone, get to work shut it off and bam gone. I think in this situation it would be beneficial...no? If anything using on an alarm for remote start so I get it on both ends.

driving around normal, you should be just fine to wait 10-20 seconds after you stop before turning it off. No big deal.
If your ripping it a new A hole, just before turning it off and stopping. Let it idle for a minute or 2.

I just don't think they are necessary. I have not seen a single turbo fail due to "oil coking"
I think its just another one of those products thats marketed to brainwash consumers into believing its important to have.

A TT is a just a aid/tool and its not needed. I have one, but on the street in the city, I don't think you could get your car hot enough to have a use for one. If so cruise the last couple of miles to cool down.

Have you ever ridden with me on one of my....good days? hehe it's like a scene from transporter, years of driving in dc and baltimore traffic...
I do see some good in these posts as I have never seen a turbo on our cars coke up..I guess the same goes for warm up, any car should be warmed up before you hammer on it just to get it expanded to clearance, this is more important with built motors as they expand more(typically) but the only thing with the turbo is the added power/cyl preassure, the turbo itself is probably fine, our shaft play etc. is just from heat and rpm under load not while the car sits in a parking lot baking....

if u know the properties of metal, any metal u realize if u put it though extremes, it gets brittle. for example when welding u let ur material cool off naturally not in water. same for a turbo it gets [freak]in hella hot so letting it cool down slower will prolong death.
Never used one on my turbo corolla or integra. Went by the book, "maximum boost" and it said all you need to do is let it idle for a few seconds if used for normal driving, or for a minute no more than two minutes if you were driving hard.

You don't need one. I wasted money on one and the only thing I use mine for is a display for my wideband - my Innovate WB sits in the glovebox.
