Default How much is "safe" EGT?

Hi!
A time ago i bought this car from somebody who tryed to tune it but he wasn't successfull...

I've my B16a2 with the following parts:

Low comp pistons (i don't know anything else about), with the compresion meter it made 13 Bar exactly on each cilinder, could anyone tell me the CR?

-Rochester/Delphi 998cc @ 43 Psi Fuel injectors

-Wallbro 255 fuel pump

-Garret T3/T4 on it is written A/R .60 M42 L B(on the compresor side) , on the exhaust side is written M1 63, The turbo part No. 466159-5003

-AEM high volume fuel rail

-AEM FPR (adjusted to 43~44 PSI at idle)

-MSD SCI-L ignition controller (Rev limiter to 8000RPM)

-MSD Blaster SS PN:8207

-MSD rotor, distributor cover and msd superconductor wires

-Denso Iridium IK21 gaped to 0.028" (i also have BKR7E plugs, but not tryed yet)

-Ligthened flywheel

-Reinforced clutch (i don't know wich is)

-B16a2 stock tranny, without LSD (if this runs harder i will get an LSD)

-Integra Type R axles

-Large FMIC

-Stock water radiator (the water temp is around 212ºF,after a few full throttle it reaches 222ºF, i think that would be nice to get an aluminium radiator, mishimoto maybe?)

-Greddy type S BOV (recirculated)

-The EGT sensor is from Autometer, upt to 1600ºF

The car runs fine, it's very responsive, pulls hard, starts well, and under full throttle is 11.8-12.2 AFR, but the EGT after 3 or 4 shifts is at 1300ºF, i think that is too much, what do you think? It's critical EGT?

Maybe a timming issue?

Im using unleaded 98octane fuel (in spain, in the usa if i'm not wrong your fuel it's 93 ron??)

Thanks!

From what a local tuner told me, its ok as long as you dont hit 1400. My car is a 2liter gsr with a 57 trim and i would rarely hit 1200 pullin thru all gears on the freeway. I run the NGK BKR7E'S try those maybe they will help good luck

depends where you mount the probe......i found my egt gauge to be a useless tuning tool and i removed it.

1300-1400+ while crusing on the highway over 3500rpm was not unusual and 1500+ under hard acceleration was the norm....this was with the probe mounted direct in the collector of the manifold measuing all 4 cylinders before the turbo.

The probe is installed at 2"-3" after the turbo (on the down pipe), before the turbo it's hotter...

wich is critical temperature for the exhaust side of the turbo?

tonight i'll try the bkr7e plugs

You probably have your EGT probe too far. I have my probe ~1" from the head on the third runner. Even there, my temps are at 1400-1500F OWT. Normal highway speeds 65mph (~110km/h) it will sit around 1000-1200F... Idle is 800F. What EMS are you running? Third piston/runner tends to be the hottest of the four, so most people will run their EGT probe at the hottest spot.

^^ correct. EGT probe should be on the leanest cylinder runner on the manifold. About 1400 degrees 700Celcius is normal on highways, but 1600 degrees can be seen on WOT, but I'd keep that limited.

My EMS is AEM 1060

On idle i've 650-700ºF, cruising ~65mph between 1000-1150ºF, WOT it goes up to 1350 after a few gears... i don't feel sure with that temp because somewhere, i've readed somewhere that the maximum temp without destroying the exhaust side of the turbo is 1400ºF. But if my EGT probe is installed after the turbo, before might be hotter :S

What is your driving on your powered cars? i would like to do some track days... but this turns so hot to fast... in that way, i'm not able to get into the track...

any ideas?

Water injection maybe?

I haven't tracked my turbo setup yet. But if your probe is after the turbo, it might not be as accurate of a reading. Like i stated before, you'll want your probe on your 3rd runner as that cylinder is typically the hottest.

Your turbo will be fine so long as you have oil circulating through it. If you have a water cooled turbo, even better. But those temps are a bit lower, but pretty consistent with what I've seen on my setup and others'.

You may want to run an oil cooler and run a larger fan/radiator setup for more fluid efficiency and volume. this way, when your engine runs at a lower op temp, your EGTs will also be lower.

Next time i'll install it on the 3rd runner... i didn't knew

The turbo is only oil cooled :S

I want to ensure that i'm not going to melt the exhaust side of the turbo (i don't know how it's called that part...)

Wich would be better first? oil cooler? water radiator? water injection?

Thanks!!

a bigger radiator and more efficient fan and oil cooler are both good upgrades, especially if you're tracking the car. Your turbo and motor will both benefit from the oil cooler. If your budget allows for them both, by all means.

I have not done enough research on water injection to make a reliable suggestion.

mine was mounted on the #3 runner about 2" from the head. it would see 400c at idle, 500-600c cruising and really wouldnt go much over 800c wide open. i really wouldnt want to see over like 800c or 1500f for any extended period of time. doesnt aluminum start to melt down at 1600ish f anyway?
