how many pounds of boost?
Hey everyone.. hope all your builds and cars are turning out well..
I have made up my mind and have decided to go single cam on boost.
I have a D16z6 in my 94 civic si coupe and im curious to know roughly how many pounds i can run safely in the STOCK motor.. i was thinking 6-8 cause im not planing to go crazy fast and it will be my daily driver.. maybe just here and there i will punch it when i get it tuned..
Please let me know your suggestions of what you think..
Your help is greatly appreciated.. Thanks

Re: how many pounds of boost?
stop thinking in pounds, its hp you need to worry about. Tune it around or under 220hp is what most say for a stock z6 and you should be fine.

You are right though, stop thinking in pounds.
Pounds of boost is irrelevant, you know why? Because all turbos have different sizes. 10psi of boost in one turbo may make this much hp but it doesnt mean 10psi of boost with another turbo will make the same hp.
You want to set power goals, not psi goals. Someone with a little more knowledge than me, chime in

Your engine can handle 250hp if tuned right on stock internals. I personally wouldnt cross the 230hp mark just to be on the safe side but these motors have been tested to withstand 250. I think 220hp or so would be more than plenty.

Re: how many pounds of boost?
yea.. 210-220 was also said from other forums.. but they say i should use the t3/t4.. they said a talon turbo or one off of a sr20det is good enough.. "maybe a t25 off a nissan sr20det, or a t28 off a s14 sr20det, or a 14b off a eagle talon or possible 16g. you can find alot of these turbos for cheap used but you will have to get a custom manifold and downpipe." JDMrides.ca so im not sure wat turbo to use

Re: how many pounds of boost?
Yeah custom is the way to go IMO. You can get it cheaper and you can use the components that you want. Those are all popular choices for turbines since theyre easy to get. Check out the forced induction forum section, more info there.

250WHP is fine on a good condition stock internals engine with a great tune.
It's safer to stay closer to 225WHP or so.
that's a little low, but yea it would be reliable. not the most you can do though.

This topic would be better discussed in the Forced Induction forum; however, you're getting really good help so far.
As was previously mentioned, you need to set goals in terms of whp, not boost pressure. It is an irrelevant measure that you needn't concern yourself with EXCEPT if you're trying to find a MAP sensor. Having said that, your stock D is safe in the 220-240whp range with a good tune on the proper fuel.
Your next step in this journey is to read through the FI FAQ at the top of the Forced Induction forum. It will give you valuable knowledge and insight. After reading through it and patrolling the forums, you should have a pretty good handle on what you want. If you have questions along the way, feel free to ask. That's why we're here. We all needed help at some point, now we're giving it back to those just starting their builds. Good luck
By the way, if you need help around HT, look for the people with blue names. We're the forum moderators. Just click the name and you can PM any questions, comments or concerns to us

Re: how many pounds of boost?
They're right.. The tune makes all the difference in pressure too..
A friend and I just tuned a Lexus Sc400 with a turbo kit.. at 10Lb it made 215hp (wheel) After adding just a little fuel (around 11.8:1) and adding 4 degrees of timing we made 274hp on 8Lb of boost 10 minutes later..
God I love Dynos.. =]
