I have had both and though the aem unit has a ton of features, i found hondata much easier to tune. We had a terrible time trying to get the aem unit to idle. I have heard that the new version of aem has been made more user friendly and easier to tune.

If you get a good basemap and some help setting up the features it's CAKE. me and my dad got his car tuned in a weekend, you take a look at wideband readings and then go to that cell and hit plus or minus on the keyboard to add or subtract fuel, it works like money. It's time consuming, yes. Hard to figure out the right starting, idling, and some other misc sensors, somewhat. If you have a basemap to go off of that will get your car started and putzing around town, you should be able to do it. If you are using a lap top in car make sure you find a lighter adapter because there is nothing worse than running out of battery juice.

getting the car daily driveable is the easy part, getting it to run like stock is hard.

You can make your own base map, i wouldn't suggest trying to make your own tune up however, go to a dyno that has an AEM EMS tuner, or pay one of the many gurus near you to come out and tune for you......... it takes experience to be able to tune...... so although I'm not saying you can't tune it yourself, i'd let someone else do it the 1st time, and make sure they explain to you what they're doing.......... and to those who thing AEM is complex/confusing..... HAHA its cake compared to electromotive and motec....... you wanna bet on that come by the shop anytime

Turbo was installed this last weekend. Running good so far. I will be tuning for 15psi in a few weeks. The boost comes on much better. Loving it.

We got the aem to run allright it was the idle that was a pita. It would not adjust at all. We sent the unit back to aem and they would get it to work. When we put the stock injectors and ecu back on it would idle like a champ. The only way we could get it to idle was to tension the throttle cable. Once i went to hondata it ran better then stock.

It will take a lot of time to get all of the smaller maps (coolant enrichment, etc) tuned right if you're starting from scratch. Your main fuel and timing maps are easy to tune if your map sensor is calibrated correctly in the EMS, you have a wideband, and you have good understanding of how timing, a/f ratio, and knock works.

the only time we ever run into problems with idle on the ems is when the iac is messed up. we have had a few cars that just wouldnt idle right at all. slaped on a spare iac we had layin around and it worked fine. when done right the ems isnt all that complicated. we can be done with a car in about 3-4 hrs on the dyno and have it driving like it had a factory ecu.
