Default Hot tanking a block.

If a block has RTV silicone on it, then is hot tanked, will it come off? I got my block back from the machine shop and this silicone was on it, but they said they didn't put it there.

Not all of it will come off, especially the thinly coated areas.

Next time, before you send any parts for cleaning, you need to razor blade off the large beads/pieces and then remove the rest with lacquer thinner and a Scotchbrite pad.

I got my block hot tanked and honed and when it came back it had silicone in this spot that is circled...

and now it leaks from there.Last year after it was sleeved it was fine, now it is leaking...

I do not know who put the silicone in there. The shop that honed it said they didn't...

Hot tanking a sleeved block is not a good idea. In fact all the sleeve installers warn against it as they apply silicone to the sleeves when they install them. The silicone you saw was probably from whoever installed your sleeves.

That doesnt seem right. My benson block has been hot tanked twice and never had any problems. Normal engine life sees much higher temps than in a hot tank.

Yeah but a hot tank has uses chemicals to clean. So, therefore it is recommended you don't hot tank a sleeved block. Since you have been lucky, does not mean everyone is.

Same thing as a hot tank or jet clean minus the caustic chemicals.

Go to GE or AEBS websites and check it out. They specifically state "Do not hot tank your sleeved block!"

i personally dont see the point of hot tanking our motors. i wouldnt take the risk of damaging 1000 dollar sleeves in order to have a clean block. iwould just hand wash it and paint it, but thats just me
