horse power rant
why is everyone talking about how they made this much or that much horse power why isnt there more talk about torque thats what wins races who cares if you got a huge turbo making 600 horse if it doesnt match up with your setup and your only gettin 200 foot pounds of torqure i think we need more torque discussions anyone else thing so?
i agree i've outrun plenty of people 1/4 mile, that couldn't understand how i could beat them ,"but you only have 200hp" (mind you there are alot of trucks around here that think they are at daytona every time they hit the road, the only thing that wakes them up is there suspension hitting the speedbump) lol/..............
Torque on a street car will only do you good until you make alot of it. I did a gsr motor that made 372whp and 231wtq at 9psi and it gets much better traction than an ls i did that made 322whp and 299tq at 16psi. The gsr is much faster on the street because he can hook. Cars that make big torque just spin the tires. A nice progressive and smooth torque curve may not feel as good but is better for a street car on street tires. Cars with big torque usually have a huge surge of torque when the power comes on and that breaks the tires loose every time!
Because when you're into dragging Wrong Wheel Drive cars you only want so much torque, as was previously stated.
Torque wins races, BLAH BLAH. Tell that to the Powerstroker I left strokin' it at the light tonight.

those torque readings you get on a dyno are just a #. the real torque is put down through the gears. Honda's rev high, they run short gears, and thats where they get torque from. You should never look at a dyno just for power or torque, you have to look at both and everything in between. lots of factors that contribute to acceleration, and u can't see all of em on paper

yeh Tony is right. I think both are bad. A real high peak torque # w/ a curve that angles down will result in alot of tire spin and then weak acceleration in comparison in the top end. like on a honda where torque=hp. also, something like a vortech SC where the torque curve faces upwards is just as bad. Torque is always climbing and as u move faster the tires do too. the tires would seem to always be trying to "break away" and u end up w/ a car that "feels" fast but is actually no where as fast as the hp #'s say it is. So that leaves us w/ what tony described, a nice flat torque curve. Probably the most boring of the three but the easiest to control.

What's this "torque wins races" bs I keep hearing? I could make more torque than a freaking train given the right gearing...but I doubt I'll be winning any races.
Torque doesn't "win races". You can always gear an engine to make torque, any amount you want...but for it to be able to actually accelerate the car, you need power.

I didn't think it was that time of year yet, but the annual torque vs. hp debate has begun
I believed torque won races until I raced a 3-series with my virtually stock d16z6 (intake and exhaust). It was UP a mountain on the highway, *****-to-the-wall and my car topped out at about 98mph (VEEEERRRYYY steep mountain) and I walked him. Though he had more torque/lb (more feet? haha), I hade more hp/lb and since it was a top-speed race, I won.
In other words, it depends on the race.

These are hondas, not mustangs. If you're making 600 WHP, chances are you're only going to be making 300-350 ft-lbs. ANY turbo that can support 600 to the ground isn't going to spool up very quick, and that's why you don't get much torque.

I'm with John... too many factors to decide that. You could make all the power and all the torque in the world, but (as an example) if u can't drive, how's that gonna help
