Default Honda turbo experts questions

Hey everyone I'm new to this forum but not new to the car scene. Iv built big turbo cars before, namely my vr6 turbo....which I dearly miss....but boost fever is kicking again if you know what I mean....iv always wanted to try something new (get out of the Volkswagen scene). Alright moving on, so iv been looking to build a Honda motor. Been looking at the b20b b18b. Reason? Because they're beyond affordable. What is the limit without sleeving these engines I'll do Pistons and rods no problem. What's the strength of the bottom ends and what horsepower numbers am I looking at maxing out with rods and Pistons. A good tune is essential and there are a lot of great shops around me with fantastic reputations so I'm not worried. Reliability is a big deal to me and I'm aware of what a good tune can do been there done that alright. Thanks guys preciate the answers

Without a goal in mind, its hard to really give you anything useful. Its easier to start this process by setting a power goal and working out the issues specific to achieving it.

Stock B series sleeves typically last into the 450-500whp range, but are unreliable past that. Stock bottom ends make 300-350whp, maybe more depending on fuel grade. The B20 has questionable sleeves and wouldnt be the ideal choice for a stock sleeve build IMO.

Read the forum FAQs stickied at the top of this forum at least twice. That will help you understand the world of turbo Hondas and what the limitations are.

The faq thing was actually helpful, how about transmission ? How much can they hold if I'm going to do a 300whp motor

Stock transmissions will hold 600whp without issue AS LONG AS you pre-load correctly if/when you launch it hard. It wont bat an eye at 300whp and neither will a stock B series block for that matter.

crank is fine forever

pistons are cast and after ~350whp or so, they break ringlands. Rods are ok, but wont work with aftermarket pistons without machining - makes more sense to replace rather than try to re-use stock rods.

Alright guys so 350whp is my goal reliably...gonna do rods and pistons, iv been reading that the b18b head doesn't flow to well, is there anything I should do about that? But other then that is there anything really necessary that makes a big difference in making this power reliably (other then a good tune)

If you're staying with the LS head and aren't going to port it or find a P8R head (the holy grail of non vtec heads) then your best bet is a set of cams, valvesprings, retainers, and some sort of aftermarket intake manifold.

Lightning teg made over 600 on an LS head but it took a ton of work and boost to get there.

For the LS head and your goals the cams really are a restriction. The factory intake manifold was geared more towards torque production due to its long runners and it won't necessarily limit you but an aftermarket type r based intake manifold would help power production.

There's a huge non vtec b series turbo thread in here. Read it.
