Honda K24/20 Newbie has questions
Hi guys,
I have a Toyota AE85 track car, and are looking to do a K24/K20 turbo conversion in it. So... I see a few people doing this conversion (in RWD), and this isnt my first rodeo with conversions, but I am keen to know which platform K24 and which K20 is the version to go for when considering forced induction. There seems to be 5-6 different K24's to start with, so keen to get some guidance from those that have been there done that. Ill be doing a built motor.

The underlying question is whether or not you plan to build the engine for this particular project to withstand higher cylinder pressures, or if this is to remain stock.

I'm using a K24A1 block because you want to use the K20A2 or S2000 oil pump, and you won't have to shave the oil pump. It just bolts right on. Use a K20A2/K20Z1/K20Z3 head. The K24A2 heads don't flow as much as the K20's do. You can use a K24A1 head and do a VTEC Killer setup too. Those heads are great to port, and they flow great when you are running nitrous, boost, or high compression. I always end up selling my spare K24A1 heads to the guys at Prayoonto. You can make a lot of power on stock sleeves of a K, but you can always sleeve them too.
I like the 5 speed tranny because the 6 speed is soooo short, and I'm lazy lol.

I learned everything I need from K20A.org. There aren't too many people on here doing K stuff, NA or boosted. There are a lot of people on there that are eager to help as long as you read the FAQ in the forced induction forum.

6speeds also break a lot, the 5s seem to last longer. I also wouldn't call it "longer" gearing, the 6 speed just has a wider range of gear ratios and better pickup rates.

As for K20A.org giving correct information.. Well. I'll just leave a big "?" on that one. Most of the real turbo and NA guys for the K-series that are serious, really don't use that forum as a reference for their particular uses. Other than the "look at my build" portions of the turbo guys, you don't really see much. So your references may be a bit limited in scope.

The information on there is probably just as good of information on here, but when searching for the specific questions that I needed to figure out when I built my K, almost none of the info came off of Honda-Tech.
Here's a good start:
