Propane would make a much more stable gas to run nitrous on all the time with too.

good thread... what about guys like me that are closer to 10 to 1 compression. Is it still safe to tune close to the 400 mark on pump gas (93)?

There are no perceivable limits to pump gas on a general basis, its really a per engine basis. For that reason good tuning alone (etc, richer and backing out timing) will not be the key to solving how much boost, ignition advance or fuel that pump gas octane limits, it will be the part of solving how much knock threshold each engine can withstand.

In my mind we know that 400whp is generally obtainable at a safe level on a build b-series with the right turbocharged set-up, likewise 900whp is obtainable as well on 116 octane. It would be to benefit to know the cylinder pressure and temperature per cylinder basis, as well as the knock count to accurately tune each engine. If the spark plug resistence could be monitored you could derive how much cylinder pressure it would be peircing. Knowing the cylinder pressure you would be able to each calculate the cylinder temperature (PV=nRT). Implimenting this into a handheld device electronically that would read cylinder pressure and temperature, as well as knock count would be the most accurate and ideal way in tuning engines to their peak horsepower on pump or race gas. I think that 500whp is within reach, but science will have to aid in getting us there....that or a few blown engines until the answer is reached.

Vaportrail made 411 on my car on 93octane. Still some bugs to be worked out. I'm goin after your achievement Tony!

Ahem, that was 414 and still plenty of room to go once we get the small issues of yours worked out.

Personally, I'm not that curious to find the limit. I think 100hp/piston is plenty for pump gas. There's too many variables in pump gas to safely push it past that on a regular basis IMHO.

How critical is a large turbo to making big whp numbers on 93 octane? I was told 15 psi would be
the limit on stock compression in my LS. 20psi if the compression was dropped to 8.5:1. 15psi on
my 54 trim would only result in 300-350whp.

I'm very interested in making big whp numbers on pump gas. Can someone go through and explain all the factors to making
400+whp on a B-series engine? I know I'm not the only curious one.

In a couple of week, I'll see how much hp my motor will put out with 91octane .

100 is the legal limit that can be dispensed from pump directly into car...anywhere

above that is not to be pumped into a vehicle, unless it's on a trailer
